has anyone tried the horizontal water nipples? i cant seem to get my two week old coturnix chicks to take to them. they have a small cup on them that will hold some water once it runs out they arent able to get more. almost seems like they cant trigger it to put out more water. any ideas on getting these to work would be greatly appreciated.

this is the type i have. i have six of them mounted into a plastic five gallon bucket. the birds understand this is where water comes from but they just cant seem to make it happen. i switched to it a couple days ago for about three hours but had to switch back to normal waterers. now im kinda wondering if i should have just went with the vertical nipples instead.

Those are the best drinking nipples they sell. THe vertical ones drip after the birds use them and they make your cage kind of nasty. However what keeps the ones you have from leaking is the same thing that makes it hard for chicks to drink from. Vertical nipples are the only ones I think are easy for chicks but again they make a mess.

it did say something in the description on them that they were for juvenial and adult birds. didnt mehtion chicks. so basically what ill do is try using it again in another week to see if the birds are strong enough to trigger it. if not ill wait another week. i havent built my watering system for my adults yet so im not able to give any reviews on them so far.

i primed them to get some water into the cup while they were watching me. all it took was one to get curious then the rest followed suite. i just wish they could trigger it on their own.

I've though about putting a vertical nipple in my 2-4 week brooders just to have one less thing to have to be on top of, but i've not done so yet.

A thought that just occurred to me, how high is the water tank for the nipples? If you place the tank lower to the ground it may relieve some head pressure and make the nipples easier to trigger. If it is a spring control this probably won't help but head pressure may be making it harder than it would typically be.

the 5 gal. bucket was sitting on the floor of the brooder and the nipples were mounted about 3- 4 inches from the bottom. i could try it without as much water in the bucket.

I had trouble with those exact nipples. Not enough water coming out of them and the triggers seemed a bit "sticky" to me. Like it was hard to press them in. So I unscrewed them and put in vertical nipples for my 8 wk old orps.

The vertical nipples can leak but I'm putting some plumbers tape on the threads to keep them from leaking as much.

so far ive had zero luck with them. but i havent tried them with my adult birds yet either.
