Hey all.
I want to fence two runs about 1722 square ft/160 M2 each with fenced 4x8 chicken coop and 215sq ft/20 m2 compost run.
In one year chickens will have first run. The second one will be a vegetable garden. One need just to simply rotate vegetables and chickens.
I know that standard...
We started with laying the foundation by manually excavating and leveling the paving stones and the floor sill during the hot temps in north Texas of 100+ degrees. The area is 6' x 16' to support up to 10 chickens.
We started coop framing soon after. Coop area is 6' x 4'.
Framing the coop...
So we've just bought a new house in Minneapolis, and the previous owners kept poultry. I've been toying with the idea of keeping a few chickens for a couple of years now, and the itch to play with it and see if I like having them around won't go away, so... chickens. (Mostly, I want to watch...
Hello!
Would love to get some opinions on a situation with my chickens. I'm not sure if this post fits best in 'Chicken Behaviors' or if it's better off in the coop design thread.
I have four chickens from my original group. I got four new chicks this past spring and had my worst chicken...
Hi folks,
I just wanted to share some pictures of our layer flock's hoop coop. It is two years old now and has held up well. I wanted to make an integrated coop/run that would give them ample room to move about, plenty of fresh air and a draft-free environment in the winter. I also wanted to...
A neigbhor is offering me forsythias plants, everything I’ve tried finding online doesn’t exactly say they’re toxic to chickens…. Ideally if not dangerous, they’ll be planted in the chicken run.
These flowering shrubs can grow massive which would create a nice hideout for the chickens.
Does...
Hello! I have a question hopefully someone here is familiar with! I am wanting to use pea gravel as a patio in my yard, and potentially in the run as well. How do you keep the gravel clean? My chickens free range for about half of the day so I want to make sure the patio I make can be easily...
Hi folks, I am new here and new to chickens Planning to get 6 baby chicks in May. I have either a 5x6 or 6x8 Amish built coop in the works for my backyard, I have half an acre. I’m unsure about what to do about a run. I would like to get 100sq ft thereabouts as I may expand to 10-12 chickens...
Hey guys! So last summer for my run it was just all dirt, the smell wasn't terrible but it definitely was there. Come fall/winter I ended up using straw on top of snow to help my chickens. Now that spring is here and summer is fast approaching, I was wondering if it would be okay to continue...
I am so upset right now, I'm posting this here as well as under "predators." I have a large 6'x15' walk in chicken run from Omlet. A HAWK has been able to kill two of our beloved satin bantam chickens through the fencing. I am devastated.
Clearly 1/2" or 1/4" hardware cloth is standard for...
They are not predator proof. Yesterday one of my 2 satin bantams was found dead (she had been acting slow, so I thought maybe she had died in the corner and something tried to snack on her. Bagged her up and sent her for necropsy in case something was happening with my flock. WHELP - fool me...
This is pictures of my hens' run. My Mom built it for them and I helped. :D My Mom used hog panels as the covering, put in some supports, fenced around it to keep predators out, covered it with plastic, then lastly put metal roofing on top to keep the snow out. This is the first time of us...
Can someone help me with ideas on a space in my run that can be used for my silkies to take cover from the larger birds in my flock? Looking for ideas & pictures if you have anything! Thanks!
Hi!
I’m looking into getting natural mulch for my chicken run. I know black walnut trees can be toxic to gardens but what about using the tree as mulch in a chicken run? Toxic to them? Toxic to my garden that is close by? Not worth the risk?
Thanks!
Hi! I'm really frustrated at the moment trying to figure out what to do. I switched my run flooring to river sand this spring after reading a number of posts and articles touting it, but two of my hens got sick with coccidiosis since and after reading some critiques of sand I'm thinking I should...
Good day all!
I'm pretty new to raising chickens so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I want to build a new coop and run for my hens but I'm unsure of where I should put it. The current chicken coop is not on flat ground and causes issues with water pooling and several other issues that...
Hey ! So for awhile i was putting timothy hay at the bottom of my chicken run since they’ve eaten all the grass. But I live in Louisiana so it rains almost everyday, and the timothy hay was just getting muddy and smelly. So I decided to put some sand down as well. But the sand has appeared to...
