I am interested in the small, goofy, surprising, cost-saving, and ingenious things that people have done that helps them with chicken keeping. We can read about the 'best ways' to do things, but when it comes down to it, it's often the simple hacks that help out! What're yours?
My favorite is a...
Hi Everyone,
I like to treat my chickens and am looking for some ideas.
Just wondering what you like to treat your chickens and how often do you treat them?
My chickens have access to unlimited food, but they’re all underweight. They’re fed Dumor layer pellets with veggie/fruit scraps, grass, weeds, and bugs.
What will help them gain weight? Their keel/breastbone is prominent, but they’re all being fed well.
I had no idea I was causing damage to my flock by giving them too much protein. Dehydrated grubs, (black soldier fly larve) can be ordered in bulk which I did. I threw out about a cup of bugs to my flock of 10 adult large breed chickens. I figured it's cold and they have been molting so they...
I live in a house where most chickens roam free 24/7. Recently, around 4 to 5 hens hatched their babies and had been doing their own thing around the yard. But i started to notice that the chicks were getting sick, aside from the chilly weather here, which we never get since i live in a tropical...
Hi everyone,
I know it sounds unusual for you, but since the first day I bought birds, I feed them every night (about 3 to 4 hours after the sunset). They really like it at night. Once I put on a chargeable light above the small coop, they come out of the nesting box and start eating eagerly...
Hello everyone!
I was wondering:Is game bird feed suitable for button quail?
I would supplement with crushed oyster shell for calcium and crickets or mealworms (every once and a while) for protein.
Any other advice will be welcome.
Thanks for answering all my newbie questions! :)
I have 15 9 month olds. They are fed early in the morning (around 5:30am) giving them 16% protein layer feed to which I add a little bit of cracked corn in their wet mash we make up for them. When cleaning their poop board and gathering eggs (usually around noon) I have to get them out away...
I just got 3 new chickens (my first ones) a week ago. They are 2 Australorp pullets and 1 silkie x frizzle pullet.
I have been picking them up once a day and feeding them a few mealworms by hand, otherwise they eat and drink from feed dishes.
They will come up to me and eat out of my hand but...
We had a bottle calf recently that we bought some more higher-quality feed for before we found out that the thing wouldn't eat pelletized feed of any kind. I've heard of people giving show chickens Horse Manna (I think I did, anyway. I can't find the source of the information now) and found this...
just bought (3) 1 wk old wyandottes yesterday. I have a bag of plain old sand left over from a nursery. Can I feed this to my chicks to aid digestion or does it have to be special “chick grit?”
Hello! I’m Emily, I’m new to Peafowl and BYC but I have been searching everywhere for answers and haven’t had any luck. I bought 4 peachicks two days ago, they’re all really healthy. Whenever I go to feed them they act like they’re choking on the game bird crumble I’ve purchaced. I’ve been...
OK, this is gonna be a lot, sorry in advance.
So I've had multiple sets of runner ducks, usually m/f pairs. This time I went with just a single female. She's about 4 months old, and so far NOT like my other ducks. 1. She HATES no LOATHES to be outside. If I put her out, she quacks at the door...

I have two geese and two ducks. I read somewhat that people have them on a schedule for feeding. Is that necessary? If so what kind of schedule should they be on? The bigger ones are around 9 weeks, the younger are around 3 weeks. Should just the big ones be on a schedule right now? Suggestions...
Hey there, earlier today while I was walking by Lydgate beach I spotted a young chicken, seemingly a cockerel, lying strangely. I approached and once I got within a yard it got up and stumbled away. It can barely walk, as it tries to step forward it trips and falls. Later, I grabbed it and kept...
I have 8 week old buff orpingtons, and I currently feed them a starter feed and occasionally throw in some dried mealworms. I was just wondering what other foods, like fruits or veggies, I can start feeding them. Thank you all!:jumpy
This is a shot of our Gen1 Marge eating for the first time with our Gen2 Marge together with Rat. A puppy we are babysitting for our daughter. What you don't see are the other two dogs who go nuts over chicken food. All my dogs love chicken food!
