I am unsure if I want to build a popped out nesting box area into my coop. The sort where you can collect eggs without opening the coop itself.
Only only have 5 pullets that free range all day. Their coop is large enough that I can simply place nesting boxes inside without worry of them...
Didn't realize it but I made a horrible mistake, I didn't even think about it...the girls were making a ruckus (i forgot to fill their veggie feeder) - after dropping off some food, I opened the nesting box door and since they were standing in the nest boxes I reached in and took out two eggs -...
I'm not sure who it is but 2 or 3 of the hens keep leaving poop in the nesting box. The hens lay at different times of the day so I'm unable to go out and see. I'm also quite busy this week with finishing an art piece for someone.
How do I keep the nesting box clean without scaring off the hens...
Tips, please! We moved our eight baby chicks (7 wks old) from the wool hen inside the dog crate (inside the run) to the coop where the big girl, Chicken Little sleeps. They have been sleeping behind the curtains in one of the nesting boxes. I have shown them the roosting bars and made them a low...
Hi all,
I just redid our chicken nesting boxes, and thought I would share!
Below are some photos of the coop. Each box is just a 2$ "dish bin" from the dollar store (this way we can remove and clean as needed - the bins are not actually attached, but resting on the bars). The wood for the...
Well, it finally happened. One of my little chickpeas became a hen today! So we are officially embarking on the next stage of chickening. They are all about 18 weeks but I suspect it was one of my Isa Browns. Yesterday I put up some new curtains made of an old sheet. I put up some nesting box...
Hey! So, I have three button quails that I keep in a 5 gallon temporary enclosure (will be upgraded next Wednesday), two younger individuals, male and female, and an older laying female, as I've been told by the breeder. Sadly, the older female still hasn't laid any eggs :( in addition to that...
I have a Blue Cochin who has gone broody for the second time in a very short time span. Chicks are only 5 weeks old.
So I separated her and made what I thought was a nice nesting box. I moved her into the box with the fake eggs she had been sitting on. That night I took the fake eggs out and...
When should I offer my girls nesting boxes? I have them blocked off for now until they learn to sleep on the roosts and not on the floor of the coop. Is that right? I don’t want to put them in too early but don’t want to be too late either! They are 8 weeks old now.
We spent more time painting the chicken coop than we did building the chicken coop. It was my wife's idea to paint it this way. We love it. The chickens love it. The neighbors love it. Do you love it?
We cut a hole in the side with a jigsaw and then put a hinge on the part we cut out for the...
Hi all!
Looks like our broody hen is still sitting in her raised nesting box for almost a week and half now. I bring her some food, so at least she eats. Looks like she has about 6-8 eggs underneath.
We have a walk in coop, where we close the door at night with all the birds...
Hi all!
My hen has gone broody for the past week......I have to see what happens if she gets off her eggs in a raised nesting box, but if the eggs DO hatch, I was trying to figure out what to do next! Thankfully, I saw this post...
My chickens recently started laying and so we bought some plain white dishpans that fit perfectly in the nesting box, and cut a little out of the front so the chickens could step in them easier. I filled them with fresh shavings and put one ceramic egg in each. I left them like that, and when I...
My blue orpington just started laying eggs, finally! The one problem is that she isnt using the nesting boxes in the coop.
How do i train her to start using the nesting boxes? She's been laying the eggs in the coop on the floor bed. I have another hen that hasnt started laying yet, but I'd like...
I have 15 pullets arriving in mid February. 3 light Brahmas, 3 Cinnamon Queens, 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Speckled Sussex. How many nesting boxes do I need and what size should I make them?
Hello! I am a very new chicken owner and have had two hens for about 8 months. They are laying and usually very active. I have a coop in my backyard and allow them to roam freely during the day to dig stretch. Recently one of my hens won't come out of the coop. At first I though that I just kept...
We recently made some alterations to the coop to make it easier to clean roost droppings, and now they won't lay in the nesting boxes. We changed from 1 long pole running length wise to 2 short poles running across the coop. We moved the nesting box closer to the entrance to the coop. The hens...
About 6 weeks ago we brought home 6, 18 week old brown laying hens. At first the girls didn't want to go outside, and laid their eggs on the ground, but now they've go the hang of things and spend their days doing chicken stuff. However, at night they wanted to sleep in their nesting boxes...
I have some artificial turf that I was thinking about using in my new coop. I have 3 bays in my nesting box and was thinking about cutting six pieces of artificial turf (only 3 at a time would be used). When it's time for cleaning, I'll take the 3 out and put the other 3 in immediately...
