It is April 4th right now my friends I have chicks who are four weeks and one day old today. That gives me three or four weeks MAX that they need to be in the coop! It is too cold for April I live in MI I can't tell you anymore that that about where I live. I have a feeling I am not getting much...
Well, supposedly it is spring. However it sure doesnt feel like it here in Minnesota! We have about 5in in most areas, and it's still coming down. I planned on getting the new coop and run set up this weekend, but it isn't looking like that's going to happen. Enjoy some pictures of our lovely...
We've got a pretty full blown blizzard going on here with gusting winds and over a foot of snow forecast. We're in front of the fire, but look where are ducks are choosing to weather the storm!
Our seven yearling silver Appleyards have become old hats at winter--true Mainers for sure! But after some VERY warm temps recently, not to mention lots of swimming and even some foraging, they were a wee bit surprised to wake up to this.
So, we're getting a little bit of snow right now in RI. I just put a tarp around all but the top 3 inches or so of the coop so that we don't end up with a foot of the snow *in* as well as outside of it. It does seem to be minimizing (but not eliminating) the snow--but now it's pretty dark in...
We've had a blowy day with lots of snow, and the ducks have been locked into their duckhouse since about noon. They are settled and sleeping now. According to the weather, the snow is supposed to wind down by around 5, but it will be dark by then and the wind and cold are supposed to persist...
It’s getting real cold here in Iowa! My ducks refuse to sleep in their house! They would rather sleep in the grass or on cement! Even right next to it!
Sometimes I catch them hanging out in it in the morning or during the day though.
I think they’re going to get very cold.. especially at night...

Has anyone built a run with 1/2" wire cloth for the top? I was curious as to how far apart the posts and beams should be to hold a large snow load of about 8 to 12 inches. I am in Ohio and we get large amounts of snow periodically. We are getting ready to build a very large run and would like...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I actually became a chicken mama on Mother's Day 2017 :) So my boyfriend and I are still relatively new to chickens and we are learning as we go.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 5 ladies that are 22 weeks old...
Hi! We live in the Everett, WA area and need a more permanent solution to protect our hens from migrating hawks. We are not handy and time constrained, so we want to hire someone to build a long, covered run that will hold up in snow and keep the hens safe and dry. Does anyone have experience...
Next year I will get 5 chickens and I hope to have a finished coop to greet them.
I am planning for an insulated coop as winter can be a bit on the cold side. So with time on my hands, I set out to draw a design using SketchUp. (It has been a bit of a learning curve).
The coop is to be 8 x 4...
