«We Could Be Legends»

Ash anxiously ran her fingers through her scalp and gave Brisa a simply sad look that said more than her words would. "I could track them...but..." She hesitated as her battered mind began reeling and had her trail off completely. But it's not like the majority of us can ever catch up with four-footeds. And then there's the factor of them being off-road. Oh, Connor.

Scowling, Bleddyn stepped away from Jenna's van and approached the others. "Too bad I ditched my dirtbike at River's." She tapped her foot on the pavement and frowned in concentration, although not seeming overly concerned for her father and friends as they raced toward an inevitable trap. "Brisa, any chance you toted your hoverboard along?"
“Um... one sec.” She muttered, heading briskly to Indigo’s car and standing on tiptoe to look in the back seat. “Yes!” Brisa exclaimed, re-emerging from the van with her hoverboard in hand. “But it only holds two people. You might be able to fit three but I doubt it.” She finished, turning to face them.

Wolfram pelted through the trees, several strides behind the flagging gray wolf tail ahead of him. Pine needles and dry, crunchy, dead leaves sprayed out of his wake, his small paws barely touching the ground before lifting off again. He had to be thankful for one thing about his pitiful cat skin: his ability to run fast and maneuver quickly with long, lank legs and a streaming tail. He was absolutely positive he had several thorns lodged in his pelt; his wounded shoulder screaming in protest, muscles aching. His throat was painfully dry, jaws open slightly to draw in ragged breaths. His lungs cried in protest as cold air reached them, chilling the skinny cat to the bone. Fur. Orange fur. He suddenly skidded to a halt, and let out a yowl. "Mr. Asfaw! This way!" He yowled, before pelting in another direction, following the snagged piece of fur. He wasn't sure the wolf could hear him, or even frankly understand him, but it was worth the shot. Grass was flattened in the wake of the fleeing she-cat, but no other sign was left that the calico Maine Coon was anywhere close.
Connor flattened his ears to block out the irritating yowl and threw his paws down, grass ripping up violently in its toil to slow his momentum. He spun in order to heed the admittedly more agile black feline, having assumed the outburst to be a summons. This kid should be following me, not the other way around.
But he had to admit to himself that he was beginning to lose his streamline direction. For reasons unknown to him, his mind seemed to be slowing and gradually losing her trail, little by little. Maybe he was simply exhausted or grief was rearing its dreary head once again- perhaps his slipping concentration was the product of both.
So, for now, he allowed himself to feel a fleeting sense of gratitude for Wolfram's lead. Maybe he really is following a more exact trail.

Heavily silent, Ash studied Brisa's board with narrowed eyes and a paling face. The reality of the pursuers' potentially costly chase was sinking in further and further with every passing second. For all she knew, this was just another horrid setup that wouldn't return her husband...unscathed.
She put both palms to her face and let a rattling sigh escape through her trembling fingers. Okay. Okay. This. It's okay.
Two people..or three kids...

"Misty, River, Jenna," she said suddenly, her tone dropping sharply. "Come over here."

Jenna looked over from where she was watching the others take off after Mapleshade. She walked towards Ash. "What are you thinking?" She asked.

Lachlan stared stupidly into space, his spine prickling with shock, guilt, and fear. Paralyzed by the fact that they had, seemingly, failed.
Mapleshade had the serum that could destroy all the inhumans... Almost everyone he loved.
And he'd done nothing to stop her.
Wolfram and Connor flew by him in blurs of motion. They'll never catch her by paw, she's too fast. And smart.
...But what about the air?

He turned slowly to Finlay and Camilla at his side, staring at them with an odd expression stuck to his face.
"Don't you dare." Camilla whimpered, obviously terrified.
"Sorry, Cam." He murmured, suddenly shifting into a crow, spreading his wings and shakily climbing into the air, setting off after the she-cat.

River stepped over, completely calm except for the slightest tremble of her tail. "...What're you planning?" Please. Please just tell me what to do. I don't know anymore.

Come on, come on! Every inch of Wolfram's small from screeched in protest as he summoned every last ounce of strength in his body, running at press-paw speed. His mind, half human, half cat, screeched two different things. One half urging himself on, the other half telling him to give up. His eyes caught another tuft of black fur, and he let out a warning yowl to Connor, rapidly changing course. "This way! This way!" He pleaded the wolf was following him. We've got her, we've got her! We can do this! Suddenly, a large, brick wall was looming ahead, and he let out a mixed noise, a mixture of a yowl with a snarl. He skidded, thrusting his shoulder sideways to stop his face from smashing into the solid wall. Thankfully, he stopped just in time, avoiding a painful crash. "Slow down! Slow down! Wall, wall!" He snarled, crouching and launching himself upwards, missing the top by several inches. She's gone. We lost.

Jessi watched as Wolfram got stuck behind the wall. She stopped just long enough to grab him and drop him on the other side, ignoring his protests at being grabbed. She didn't want to give up that easily, and she couldn't track Mapleshade without him or another animal shifter. She looked around for any sign of Mapleshade. She flew higher in the air, and caught a brief glimpse of a black and orange cat. She shot after it. Her wings burned, but she didn't stop.

Wolfram yowled in triumph, shooting after the she-cat. He closed on her tail, and leapt, slamming her to the ground. "Give it here, Ma–" He stopped. Underneath him was not a long haired calico Maine Coon, but a young, sleek, short furred gray, orange and white kitten, a blue-gray butterfly clamped between her jaws. "Meep! Let go!" She squealed, squirming.
"Sorry! I'm sorry. We are looking for a cat, Maine Coon, calico, mangled face, and she has something in her mouth. It's white, something a Nofur would use. Have you seen her?" He meowed, releasing the squirming kitten.
"Sorry, Neko. I've been by this wall all day, and there has been no one but you. Gotta run!" She snatched her butterfly, and ran,
Wolfram snarled, pelting by to the wall. He shifted instantly, and leaned against the wall, panting heavily. "Jessi! It's a trap! That wasn't Mapleshade, it's just a kitten. Mapleshade isn't over here, she's on the otherside, and by now she's gone!"

Jessi stopped and landed next to him. "Darn it!" She yelled. The wall was looking like it would be good for punching, but she decided against punching it. She sighed. "Now what? We should keep looking, right? Do you know where she would go? Maybe back to the Pure base you guys were taken to." She said, looking around. It's pointless. She's already long gone, and is probably about to unleash the poison. We'll never find it in time. She thought.
