«We Could Be Legends»

As they drove in silence, Jessi would occasionally glance at Indigo. She thought of ways to break said silence, but didn't want to make Indigo uncomfortable by her chattiness. "He likes you, you know." Jessi said finally. "A lot. Don't let his jerky behavior convince you otherwise."
"Oh?" Indigo asked. She supposed he did. All the men did, and she hated it. But Toby, she had thought maybe not. He was a little scared, but she liked him. The streets were drier than they had been in days. They got to the base quickly.

"Yeah. Not in the drooling kinda way, but you interest him and he wants to get to know you more." Jessi replied.

"I don't think that's ever happened with me before. Either I'm despised or worshipped. I think that's special," Indigo slapped her own face. That sounded awfully sappy and philosophical.

"That must suck." She said.

Toby heard a car pull up, and glanced out the window. He grabbed the large gun he had set next to him when treating Leona's wounds, and glanced down at Alpha. "Sit. Stay." He commanded, and watched as Alpha obeyed. He turned the safety of the gun off, and walked outside. He pointed the gun at them, and then realized who they were. "Jessi?" He asked shocked, lowering the gun. "What are you guys doing here?"
Jessi got out of the car and tackled him in a hug. "You weren't answering your phone, and I was worried. I thought you might've been hurt. Again." She replied.
"Oh. I guess I forgot to tell you. My phone broke, and it's hopefully getting fixed." He said.

"Nothing," Indigo said. Jessi's pupils were two black spheres. "He'll be fine, I'm sure," Indigo hoped with her powers her forced optimism was as contagious as Jessi's fear.

Jessi sighed, and hoped Indigo was right. I'm just overprotective. they're going to be fine. It's Toby, he can take care of himself. Sometimes. Even though Indigo's enchantment calmed her down some, she still worried. Pulling out her phone, she dialed Toby's number, only to have it go straight to voicemail.

"His phone isn't working?" Nervous energy rushed through Indigo's body. "He could have just, left it somewhere," her voice shook. I'm sure he's just is a little... disorganized, sure.
"We have to get to the Pure base. No matter what's there," Indigo's voice was square, steady, solid. Her heart, however, felt like a trapped bird, beating its wings in its little rib cage.
Gosh, I'm worse than Jessi. I can't let anything happen to Toby. Or the other Multitude members. But she thought of Toby the most.

Jessi shook her head. "That's not like him to leave his phone somewhere. He always answers it." She said. And the last time he didn't he was about to jump off a five story building. "Where is the Multitude base? I'm sure it probably wouldn't hurt if I stopped by there to make sure everyone is okay..."

"I'll get you there," said Indigo. The car was still running from five of my posts ago.

"Thanks, Indigo." Jessi said. Assuming she meant now, she gave one last look at the group, and climbed in the passenger seat of the car.

Considering the fact no one else was in any hurry, Indigo drove away, in the direction of the Pure base.

Brisa watched, surprised, as the car drove away. “Now what?” She asked, beginning to lose hope herself.

"That must suck." She said.

"Well, some of us were a little worried," Indigo said. She bit her lip, watching Jessi embrace him, unsure of what to do with her arms and legs.
"We have to find all the Multitude and ask them for help. Mapleshade has the key." Indigo's face was the color of the cream on a cup of coffee.

Toby took a step away from Jessi, pushing her wings off of him. Awww, Indigo likes you!
No she doesn't, she likes her coworkers.
She still does like you. If she didn't she wouldn't have put up with you this long. She also confessed to it earlier.
Liar.

He glanced at Indigo, and quickly dropped his gaze down to his shoes. "So far there's twelve dead. A little concerning because I see 50+ bodies everywhere, but whatever. I haven't found all of the survivors yet. Everyone's been to shocked - medically and emotionally, probably - to listen to me. Not like they would in the first place. I'm not holding a grudge or anything." He said, walking inside. He stopped and turned to her. "Wait, did you just say Mapleshade has the key?"

As she heard his words, Indigo bit her lip harder. So much death! She was coming very close to bleeding. Or crying. She wasn't sure. How much of this was her fault? None. It couldn't be.
Toby finished speaking and she sucked her mouth back into a more natural shape.
"Yes. Mapleshade has the key. We got it and she stole it right after we left the bank. I can't believe we just walked into her trap. It seemed so obvious." But Indigo knew it was going to happen. Mapleshade would steal the key. Indigo knew that would happen. She just hadn't known what else to do.

Toby watched her as she spoke, noticing she looked like she was going to cry. Please don't cry, don't cry, ahhhhhhhh, I don't like crying people!
"Erm... well-uh- you guys couldn't have known for sure it was a trap, and umm.. you did what you thought was right, which-uh- isn't something a lot of people do, so, umm... A for effort?" He mumbled awkwardly, trying to keep her from crying.

"Yeah," Indigo squinted. "What happened to you?" She didn't helpfully include she meant what happened to his communication ability, so she probably had scrambled his brain even further.
