«We Could Be Legends»

”Okay.” She pulled it out of her pocket and tore open the envelope, feeling exposed and vulnerable standing in the open like this. Lifting the key out, she held it carefully in the palm of her hand. “I knew it was just a bank key, so I don’t know what I was expecting, but that’s a bit anticlimactic.” She admitted sheepishly.
Bleddyn was tempted to touch it, but Brisa seemed like she would spook at the slightest sudden movement. "Well, that's that," she agreed wryly. "For being the key to a whole race's destruction, looks pretty easily underestimated." There's nothing even really distinct about it....I wonder....
"Or duplicated, for that matter."

"That's what she would have wanted though," Wolfram murmured, "my mother. This is something she would do, something discreet, something people would easily underestimate."
This is insane. This is insane. This is a key, to a poison, that my mother made. She created a poison, and kept a poison, that can destroy a entire race. But why?

"No, really," Bleddyn continued hurriedly. "Think about it."
Her dull voice gained confidence as the idea formed further. "There's really nothing distinct about it. If we were able to create a copy..."

"What are you on about?" Wolfram hissed. "Why would we need to create a copy? We don't need two keys that can access a poison, and if we have two its more risk that Mapleshade could get one. So, spit it out, what are you talking about?"

"Obviously not an identical workable copy," Bleddyn retorted, unamused by his automatic assumption of her density. "But something that she could get her hands on and get her off our backs for a bit. Get it? Basically a dumb faux decoy for an equally dumb kitty. Betcha it'd work, too."

"Ok, ok...sure, but tell me, Bleddyn, how do you think this is going to play out? Surely she will, I don't know, hold us under gun point until we tell her where she can get the actually poison? This isn't the poison, keep in mind, it is only the key to get it. So unless you have a idea of where we could tell her to go to "get the poison", that idea isn't going to work." Wolfram snapped, sarcasm dripping from his voice. If you weren't such a idiot, you wouldn't be so cruel to her. She was only making a suggestion. "Also, do you really think she's that dumb? She's dumb, but she isn't dumb enough to think we'd give in so easily."[/I]

"Yup, get it, sorry," Bleddyn muttered, hating herself for even having gone ahead and made such an inane suggestion. Might as well let myself realize that we're not playing some dumb kid's game with pathetically inept villains. She folded her arms across her chest tightly and straightened up slightly, glaring daggers at an innocent Jeep at the far end of the parking lot. "What's obvious as well is that I don't know what I'm saying."

"Look, no...I'm sorry, don't give me a lecture on how you don't do apologies again, I shouldn't have snapped like I did. It's just...she's smart, Dyn. She knows what she's doing and what she wants, and she isn't going to stop until she gets it. She realizes little things, I know that. I've grown up with her around all my life, she knows I won't give up that easy." Wolfram sighed, his frown deepening somehow. "I've lied to her once about the key, if we do it again we are absolutely done for."

"Dog, you snap no matter what," Bleddyn reminded him calmly, fully anticipating a charged retort and prepared to be amused by it. "And, yeah, I can get that she's intelligent. She's gotta be- since her being intense executive of ultimate supremacy organization and all." She paused for a moment, letting herself become fixated by random cars again. "It was nice to indulge myself in that stupid fantasy of miraculously distracting her, though, you know?"

“We could tell her it’s to a different bank.” Brisa suggested, shrugging. “It does seem a little plausible, especially if we made it seem realistic. But even if we don’t want to do that then we could try a decoy of some kind. I don’t know what, though.”
