"You're in WinClan. You'll be safe here while you heal." Yellow eyes glinting with concern, she scanned the snow white hen with her gaze. Midnightgem had sprained a wing and a leg, so Silver recognized the redness and swelling around this new hen's leg and wing. The medicine hen--she believed her name was Thorntalon--had all ready seen to her injuries, but Silver was determined to do something rather than sit around waiting for her excited mind to finally give way to sleep.

"I'm Silver," she nodded, "an almost-member of WingClan. What's your name? I could get you something to eat, if you like, you look like you've been on the run for a while."

"Well , we're running out of lichen...if you don't mind, maybe you could get some....?"

Giving a quick departing smile of reassurance, the white leghorn dashed out of the gnarled tree and over to the food-pile. Carefully emulating what she had seen the traveling hens of the clan do, she took a leaf--making sure it was not nettle!--and putting a few berries, some dandelions, and some fresh fish. Balancing the parcel carefully in her beak, dropping it once on the way because she had forgot to fold the ends, Silver deposited the food in front of Icegem.

"I'm not sure what you like," she said nervously, though feeling that any food would be welcome.

"Well , we're running out of lichen...if you don't mind, maybe you could get some....?"

"Yes, I can do that!" However, Silver's feet had not carried her far before the strange thought struck her that she hadn't the faintest idea of what lichen was. Embarrassed, she crept over to the den and took a quick look around the corner, hoping nobody would see her and realize that she couldn't do a little thing like find lichen. The stuff on Icegem's wing was a light bluish-green, and flaky. Easy enough to remember.

It took a good fifteen minutes for Silver to find a large enough leaf that was not poison ivy, and scrape off some of the strange substance from a nearby tree in the camp. Careful to actually fold the ends this time, she brought the package back to Thorntalon, delighted that she had accomplished an actual mission.

"What . . . what is the lichen for?" she couldn't help but ask, staring dumbfounded at the weird stuff that the medicine hen obviously prized.
