“Clearance Bin” at Tractor Supply

Oh, well I can imagine that better than a grown man walking around in one of those tiny brooders. It still must take a lot of carelessness to kill a chick like that.
Mine had a guy stomping through tanks, and shoveling the chicks up with the bedding, tossing them through the air into a box on the other side of the cattle panels. The whole time, he was talking to my husband and me. The manager did not fire him for that.
she checked each chick over for pasty butt as
Sadly, I did not think to check for pasty but this past year. I am not in the habit of buying feed store birds, and there were other problems to deal with. It was Rural King, and I chose them for three reasons. More birds, better treatment, and I prefer to choose my own birds.
Duckling is 4, and allowed to pick chicks. The child has done an assist already. She’s good to go. :thumbsup She was keeping an unsupervised toddler (16-18 mos) from touching the heat lamps, but pointing out the different birds. :love The baby’ parents were playing with chicks they admitted to not intending to buy. :rant Dad squeezed a chick that I bought despite its suddenly off behavior. As we all agree, I could not leave it. I got Duckling to pick a few chicks, but the saleswoman was yammering on, and bringing a disinterested guy into her nonsense. It all got very stressful, and I needed to get out of there.
I lost three right away. All had awful pasty butt, and the one that was squeezed had blood trickling out of its mouth.
I called the store, and the woman that I spoke with said she had been on vacation for a week, and had just gotten there. She said she had not even seen the shipment of birds yet. She would take care of the pasty butts, and deal with the incompetent woman that was there in her absence.
I live too far away to have simply exchanged the dead birds. I’m deeply regretting not waiting for a local BYC member to come with my quail chicks.

I went to a Rural King awhile back and the tanks were so filthy that there was more poop in the tanks than shavings. I did go to the manager and told him about the conditions and also told him that , that didn't look good to customers and if I were looking to buy chicks I certainly wouldn't want to buy those. The manager actually thanked me. The next time I went into the store I went to look at the chicks, like I usually do when I go into the store, and the tanks this time looked much better and cleaner.
Good for you for bringing it to the manager's attention! :highfive:

I recently complained about the conditions at RK and got a response from the store manager with his direct contact info. He assured me that the conditions had been addressed...and I assured him I'd let him know, personally, if I witnessed substandard conditions again. I haven't gone back yet, but I won't hesitate to complain directly to him if warranted. The animals deserve better!
