Cutting glass isn't all that hard, but your piece is plenty small. With the coffee table idea, would you be comfortable with your family being all around it? They might bump into it, the cords might get tripped on, and it will make noise. Will they be bothered if they are watching TV?
oh yeah... cords... my current one is in the living room right in front of the tv, it makes some noise from the fans and the thermostats kicking on and off, no ones complained. The kids have run into it a couple times playing just dance before I had the eggs in there.

maybe I could convert the desk I have in the closet. :D the main concern for me is I want what ever I make to stay in the house and either be easily store-able or usable when it's not being used as an incubator.

I also have an old tv stand that the incubator is on that I could convert part of the shelves into an incubator...

Well, it depends upon the kind of desk. If it were me, I would have all kinds of tools available, and I would cut a hole in the top of the desk to put the glass in.

it's your standard 4 drawer desk 3 square ones down the side and 1 shallow rectangular one above the leg space. I've got a decent supply of tools and a husband who's not gonna complain if I go get one we don't already have. :p
