I think he'll be a little on the chewy side but I haven't tried to roast one at that age. The heritage breeds are pretty scrawny anyway (most of them) even full grown. I put a couple in the instant pot and cooked them--oh, an hour and a half? A long time anyway. DH complained they were tough. I didn't think so and he most likely wouldn't have either if he hadn't known they were roos. :lau I have been told heritage birds would have a more "chickeny" flavor. They tasted like chicken. 🤷‍♀️

Anyway I guess the moral would be, don't tell 'em it's a rooster. They'll love it. (Unless you roast/fry it...)
Thank you!!! You’ve been very helpful!! Jack is pretty large, he’s probably about 10-12 pounds by now (he was around 7 at 4 months old), so definitely massive which is why I thought a roast would be nice. :D it’s also why I’m a little scared of him haha he could do some serious damage if he wanted to!! He’s very tall/large too and beefy and just a BIG rooster. If Danno tried something it probably wouldn’t even hurt 😂🤣

I would be tempted too, with a rooster who did all the niceties for his girls. You don't have to do anything you don't want to--as long as he's not a danger to others--especially children.

I'm gonna process a bunch of roosters tomorrow, especially the head rooster. He's started attacking my hand when I put food into the small coop. Tonight he's getting that scrawny neck grabbed. I'll catch the others in the morning but I think it'll be easier to catch him tonight. Wish me luck. :lau :fl Maybe some gloves would be in order... 🤔

You really should process those extra quail boys, though. Are they crowing yet? Are you sure they're males?
Yeah, he’s not really quite doing all that stuff yet but he’s been jumping them FAR less (barely at all today) and starting to dance a tiny bit sometimes. So hopefully he gets even better. He was jumping them all relentlessly for a while 😂🤣🙈 he appears to be good with chicks too. We don’t have any kids around so that’s not an issue and the odd thing is he never goes after my dad and he didn’t even go after my friends when they were here so

He seems to recognize when I’m giving them food or treats and appreciates that.

Good luck with your boys! :D

Oh and about the quail...

Yeah, I’m definitely going to! It’s hard because I have to do it when my mother’s not home so yeah. I tried to the other day and wasn’t able to. But they’re definitely boys and have been crowing for maybe a week or two? Not really sure. Definitely especially the last week. And they’ve started to fight and hurt each other so I’m going to put some down tonight. I did put down a hurt/sickly girl yesterday too.

I didn’t realize that!! Thank you! :) I’m not sure what the sugar was in this one. Probably about the same or maybe a little lower but not sure. But I’d rather just eat real ice cream less often than eat that carp more often 😂🤣 It was so bad. My main problem with it was it just tasted so... light??? If that makes sense. Like it tasted like water 😂🤣🤮🤢
I like sherbet. Lots of sugar in the commercial ones, though. I can make a pretty passible one in the Cuisinart out of fake sugar and frozen berries with a bit of water or milk, but it's really noisy and makes a mess, so I don't do it very often

I just slow roast them at a lower temperature. They come out fine for me. The legs of any heritage bird raised properly will always be tougher than the meat birds that only walk to and from their feed and water.

I might have to try that if he gives me one more reason to 😂🤣🙈

I am thinking he may be pretty tough though as he free ranges a lot and goes all over the place.

I buy it occasionally because they have some very nice flavor options. But I will admit that their ice cream is not as dense as I prefer.
I'm not a huge ice cream eater but Tillamook makes my favourite (non-gourmet) cheese of all time.
It's called national distributing. We even have Tillamook here. It did not impress me.
To be fair, nothing impresses you.

It sounds delicious!! I love fruit anything :love especially berries!!!

He knows you're scared of him. 😉

Mine get to run around all over too. I never have worried about their ages. The most important part is to age them properly before cooking them.

I like a good stuffed, roast chicken with all the trimmings including gravy, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, succotash, cranberries, etc.
