➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Today I tried out the new scale. Weighed the breeders (MyShire Jumbos QB#4). Criteria was greater than 10 ounces live weight. I know Zack uses 11 ounces, but that would have left me with 4 females. I'd have to make another order.

Set #1 - 4 female and 2 males.
Female weights: 12.5, 11, 10.5 & 9.75
Males: 10.5 and 10 (moved to set #3)

Set #2 - 5 females and 1 male
Females: 11, 10.5, 10.5, 9.75, & 9.75
Male: 9 ounces

Set #3 was 4 females.
2 Wild type from QB#6 were 11 & 10.5
2 White from Lucky line were 10 & 9

The 4 (except the 9 oz male) under 10 ounces are marinating.

Surprised the white one made weight and at the 12.5 ounce female. She is big and made the 10.5 ounce look small.

9 females and 3 males in the breeder cages.

Considering a male from QB#8 which should be a Jumbo x Lucky line to replace Mr. 9 ounce. None are looking particularly large at 7 weeks. They have a bit more growing to do. Be neat if a white male made weight here. :)

QB#8 is mostly from Set#3 which should be Jumbo male over the 2 white girls. The white boy slipped by me, but foamed shortly afterwards. 3 weeks to find out. Without added light, vent sexing may be an issue. For some reason the other 2 sets weren't fertile. I think 2 eggs from Set 2 hatched. So white would be good.

I give them away.
I wouldn't mind giving some away either. I think I'm gonna list some of my quailies &/or eggs on Craigslist. See if that's worth my time or not. There's a guy at the feed store interested in "some", but he asked if I had any "Buff" ones.
I want to see if my newest babies grow up to be bigger than average size. If they do then I will set some more eggs from that cage.
I don't really want a whole bunch of mixed colorful little things.
I want big things.
I might have to order some more jumbo eggs since I ruined my last batch of jumbo eggs.
I don't think my jumbos are fertile, my Roux Dilute is trying but the hen is jumbo compared to him.
so the NYD hatch a long is underway....set date for coturnix is December 14......unless mine stop laying on me, i will probably set a VERY SMALL batch.....who else is in???
:flI would but I've got an active hatch date of Dec 15 for some of my own 1st eggs.
And.....:oops:my other bator has a test batch of turkey eggs in it, that hatch date is 12/25.
we are eating as many as we can!! I have probably put at least 200 of my own eggs through the incubator this year counting chicken and quail. I’ve given away around 25 dozen or so and I sold a lot of the chicken eggs when I had all my layers here. I have also fed several to the birds both intentionally and unintentionally.
The 200 that you hatched, what did you do with them? Sell, swap, give away, eat?
I'm just not a salesperson.
I don't like selling things period.
That makes 2 of us!
The only difference between giving things away and selling them is that people give you money when you hand over the goods.
:lau
Exactly!! Doesn’t have to be a big deal or “salesy” at all. Also you could always just put a stand outside and a box for the money :lau
I'd like to see that "Quail Stand" with an honor system payment box in place. Feeders, waterers, quail, eggs, pens, etc would all be gone.... even the payment box would probably end up relocated as well.
If I was getting eggs I would set some
I've got eggs too, and I'm not that far. Wouldn't even have to send them in the post.
They are in the
Family: Phasianidae Genius: Lophura
Species: Lophura nycthemera
Silver's, along with other pheasants that aren't in the True pheasant groups are grouped loosely in what most people term "Ornamental pheasants". There are 15 subspecies in the Genus: Lophura.
Show off!
:barnieIt's smart people like you that make the rest of us look so much dumber!
I'm the same way. I'm not into selling... DH wants us to go to a chicken swap next Sunday to sell some chicks. We'll see how that goes.
That sounds like fun!

Congratulations to @muddy75 , @R2elk , @The Phantom !!!
I too, am sitting on my hands. I have plenty of birds now. I don't need more.
You know, it's odd. I haven't heard any crowing out of my young bird coop. They're over two months old now, so I expected to hear something by now. I'm going to try vent sexing them today. I don't know what I'm doing, though, so I have no idea if I'll get it right or not.
:popI wanted to get in on the AUCTIONS this weekend, but since both my bators are occupied I didn't have much choice.:barnie
Do you want some eggs?
:lau
Free ones are ok!!!!
:gig:lau
Everybody likes free!
She is pretty, isn't she? Here's a picture of her in her new (slightly muddy) new home with the rest of my adults.

That sounds like work doing all that weighing!
I've got a weird tiny in my Pansy batch that needs to be culled asap.
It hasn't been "right" since it was a few days old. It's smaller than the others, walks squatty, mostly backwards, and seems to be near constantly fussy.:smack

May be the first and last time we do it... We will see

My cage of 6....the cage I was so sure there were at least 2 males in...
6 eggs tonight.

I just butchered the males from the other cage yesterday.

There is ZERO crowing here from ALL of my cages.

There is only the one big boy that was crowing while I had him in a cage for a few days by himself.
He hasn't made a noise since.
He is the dad of my new babies.

I think I might only have ONE darn male out of 4 cages with 16 other quail.

Mine have stopped crowing too for some reason. They are all split up in pairs or trios, I don't know if that's why they have quieted down. 7 hens and 5 roos.

Mine never started crowing.

None of mine ever crow except when the male is in jail.
