āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

If I remember in the morning I'll look for my notebooks.
I draw pictures on paper...

If you notice in the thread I'm going to link below...
I have my eggs numbered and I keep them in the exact same spot, usually, in the incubator. Every time I candle I'll make a note about the egg next to the number on paper.

If you were to number your eggs and keep track of more information it will help you pinpoint problems along the way.

You might also notice how I keep all of my eggs as close as possible in one spot of the incubator...
It's because I know this area doesn't have temp spikes.

Once this batch is done, I'm going to run my incubator and study it for sure, I can see temp graphs from my thermometer. So I can put it in different positions and compare the graphs for temp differences.

I had no idea this was so touchy. How the heck do hens incubate eggs.

Hens haven't the advantage of 'experts' or 'book knowledge'! :lau .....just millions of years of genetical info downloaded! ;)

Morning update:
I have three healthy chicks in the brooder, including mean chick who is now getting along with the other two.
Overnight I had one hatch from the pointy end (I just figured it wouldn't hatch, at least not on its own) but now it has slightly curled feet and can't walk. I was going to just cull it but I'll see if I can tape the feet and correct it since they're not too curled to begin with. PXL_20211221_150423832.MP.jpg

Curled toes can often be fixed with "shoes". The quality of this pic is terrible, I know, but you can see how I used card stock and painter's tape on this one.

Paper towels are slippery you need something grippy on the floor. I use rug grippers that go under rugs and cut the size I need for the brooder. You can wash and reuse them.
Also, you need to grind up the quail's feed. I use a coffee grinder, and it works perfect.

Hey by the way sorry I kind of hijacked your thread. I just thought I would make a quick hello post, hatch some quails and be done. XD
This site is how I learned everything about raising chickens and building coops and stuff, and now incubating quails too. Love you all.
This is basically a "chat" thread. All of Kiki's threads are, lol. :lau

Thanks! I was thinking it was a bit slippy so I was keeping an eye on it. I'll put some more shelf liner in the brooder.

I don't have a coffee grinder but I did run it through the food processor which I read somewhere. It did leave bigger chunks but most of it is small and powdery, and they were eating the smaller bits.

I just ran it through a sieve and I got a very fine powder, is that too fine? If I put some of the larger pieces in will they just eat around the bigger chunks or will they choke?
