➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

You might be able to tell here...I use these glass cube things.
Uses glass cubes because she lost all her marbles. :lau

I'm using marbles. At least for the first week, then switched it to a cute little chick waterer that Crazy Lady bought off Amazon. It works well on chickens for the first WEEK. Then it is too small. Working remarkably well for quail for the first month. I fussed when she first bought it, but told her good job now that we are using it more. She doesn't buy chicken stuff anymore. For some reason, we are well stocked now. :barnie

I have 33 mixed Coturnix due to hatch Monday. Tomorrow I have to go get some marbles to put in the waterers.
Rocks, beads, anything to keep them from bathing in it.

Took a plastic food container and cut a hole in the side for their heads. Stuck marbles in it, cause I wanted it to look like the lids they were making messes in. I'd check on them and one crawled inside, couldn't get out and was huddled in the corner. Not once, but twice. After that I took it out and went with the chick waterer. They try to go body surfing in that.

Took the waterer and turned it into a feeder. Second batch will climb into it. At least, they crawl back out.

I had turkeys do that. Kept climbing in the waterers. Now I make sure I have chicks in with the turkeys to teach the turkeys.

Tomorrow morning. About 26 of them.

Build a bigger pen yet?
:lau
Yeah, me neither. Batch 2 is a week old and time to go outside. Turned the heater off last night. All were huddled in a corner this morning. 70°F in the brooder. 60°F outside next week forecast.

Now to finish Pen#2. Between the rain & coldness.

These things sprout feathers overnight!

I have mine in a cardboard box. They were inspecting it for a way to escape for almost an hour. They never cried, so I assume they are okay. They are asleep in the corner now.
I made a feeder out of a rectangle margarine bowl. I put a hole along the side. I’m pretty sure they can get their heads inside. Once I know they can fit their heads, but not their body, I can use it for water instead.
