➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Remind me again what we are all using as quail living quarters flooring covering..

I use sawdust (once they are out of brooder), I change it weekly-as they are out on ground during the day. I like sawdust because it's cheap enough, easy to buy big blocks of, and it's awesome to add to the compost pile.
Anyway, as the quail population increases, the sawdust is irritating my arms and giving me itchy rashes. Not sure what else to use that is 'semi environmentally friendly' ? I wish I could use puppy pads, but they are not compostable.
I'm considering using old towels (wash them weekly), or maybe cover towels with paper towel -that would be super easy to change, just swap a layer out each day.

I've seen rice hulls in enormous bags. Expensive I think, but apparently insect resistant.
Can you use good ole dirt?

I just had my first loss.
I :hit.
Looks like a dummy managed to break it's neck. Is that even possible?
Her head was in a jacked up position.
:(

Oh I'm so sorry Kiki :hit

Dirt.. I never thought of dirt!! Maybe too heavy for me to lift the cages for weekly cleaning :idunno I will think on that today! Thanks!
You could put a few dirt containers in.
Dollar store has nice ones.

I'm so sorry about your bird ! They definitely can and do flush and break necks.

Omfg I love this place. Got a quail-net for escapees the other day, and a million heavy duty glass tumblers with lids(?) to make into feeders/grit/oyster shell containers.

Plus, those nacho things.
The kitchen dish tub thing ...
Hold let me go get a pic. Brb
