āž” Quail Hatch Along🄚

Last night before bed I swear I saw an egg rock. Thought nothing of it, babies are due Wednesday.

It's 0200, I got up to go to the bathroom and checked on the incubator temp/humidity. There are at least a dozen chicks in there right now.
Golly, Pyle....Surprise, surprise, surprise!!!!
Yay...:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy:jumpy
need to check your temp, IM ...must be running a little high.

Yes it was a little high, a little low, a little all over the place. Puppy bumped the temp and I was worried about getting any to hatch period.

I seem to learn something with every hatch. Glad to know they weren't baked alive anyway.

Yep, always seems someone, something wants to play havoc with our eggs! :barnie

I've had them 'baked alive' as you stated...its not a pleasant sight. Had 48 expensive, rare pheasant eggs on the first day of lockdown. The temp 'spiked' while I was at work, was 105°F when I got home...it was too late, all would have hatched but none did due to the spike. Cracked them all open to see and all would have hatched...very sad day!

Oh no! That was a sad day indeed Sean.

Did you figure out what caused the spike? If I couldn't determine it was my fault I probably wouldn't trust the equipment.

Just one of those 'freak' things that happens with foam bators sometimes. I think the temp in the house changed and that's what caused the bator to respond with increasing the temp...the bator was in a room that doesn't have AC or heat but is usually stable around 74°F. A cold front blew in and the room got fairly cold by the time I got home.(55°F) those bators can't keep the temp stable if it's not in the range of 68 to 75°F.
That's all I got...I don't know for sure but it's the most likely suspect.

You're not the first person to say this honestly. It makes me keep a close eye on the thermometer when I'm hatching.

Are cabinet models more reliable? Or are you still using foam?

All 3 of my cabinet bators were full. When that happens I have 5 foam bators that I use. It was a foam bator that I had modified and had been working flawlessly....only thing I can really point to is the room temp was too low for the bator to keep up and just remaind on, instead of cutting off ...the old mercury thermometers in the bator were reading 105°F, the digital reading on the bator was reading 90°F. As soon as I got the temp in the room back to 72°F the temps stayed constant at 100°F which is the temp I run my bators at....easyer than trying to keep on at 99.5°F.
