Quick update.
They think there are 18 now....say it's hard to count them all.

When it gets like that, I find it easier to count the unhatched eggs to figure out how many are hatched.

I am so jealous! I can't hatch any chicks- hubby wants me to stop having chickens because I retire soon and we will be traveling. I am happy to retire but can't I just take the chicks with me

That sounds exceedingly reasonable to me, I dunno what his problem is

Reading up on quail, I found a site where the guy swears it takes 23 days for Japanese quail to hatch. He has been hatching them for many years.
Someone want to explain that? I could have sworn it was 2 1/2 weeks.

Must be keeping them at a weird temperature or something

Mine have consistently taken between 16 and 22 days.

Do you have a neighbor or family member who can look after in exchange for eggs while you are traveling?

I can't imagine not having chickens now.

19! The first pipper did die and the only other egg quit sometime last weekish. I'll open both eggs soon.
