➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

The Faker would LOVE to play with a baby quail.
All of the quail are now bigger than him...he would probably be scared of one if I let him play.

My real dogs...would go ape nuts if I made the mistake of letting a quail escape.
I'd be too scared they would then destroy my cages to get to them.
This is a problem. My brooder hutch backs up to the dog yard fence. I had to put sheets of plywood between the fence and the brooder pen to keep Bo from going nuts. It is ok when I keep the babies in the hutch but when I move them to the ground..... he looses his cool.

My bad dog died last year so I have been lucky. (He liked to eat chicken.)

My current real dogs don't bother any of my birds but they do not share the yard at the same time. They will walk by and look at the chickens or sniff the quail cages for a second but don't bother them any.

Unless you own the parents, the trauma of shipping affecting the availability of nutrients to the chick, poor genetics/high inbreeding, or poor parent nutrition are the likeliest suspects. If you do own the parents, I'd reassess the feed, add vitamins, maybe shake things up with some new breeder males unless things improve after that. In any of those cases it makes sense you'd see a high mortality right around when they use up most of their egg yolk (i.e. now).

I bought eggs and had them shipped. I will be ordering from another source to rule out anything I can do,

I candled all 30 eggs this morning so far 12 clears and 2 early quiters

That'll be a satisfying but manageable batch-o-babies, I like!

Guys guys guys guys. THREE HATCHES AND 130 EGGS ALL POTENTIALLY SNOWIE/PEARLS and NADA. My two possibles have fledged out as what I am calling "dirty pearls" or "yellow snows," about halfway between an italian and pearl with both golden and white patches, but they are FAR more golden than their parents. They are still beautiful but lack good contrast and I am so mad! Grrrr! ARGH! :barnie

Time to try out my next supplier I guess. I AM VERY READY TO BE DONE HATCHING THOUGH.
