➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

Solo is tapping on the shell.
I'm dying.
What in the world am I going to do with one quail.
One.
:th

I can't believe this.
I'm so glad I didn't immediately trash all of the eggs the other day.
Are you sure you are down to one??? Only one?

Get buddies for Solo from someone close who happens to have quail hatching soon? Know anyone?

Yes, we have draw down all over the place. This is real and gonna happen!

Had one that had definitely NOT started draw down. Still had a liquid level and veins. This one will be later than the others.

My flash light just died.
It can't get dark soon enough so I can check for friends.
I really don't think he will have a friend though. But I am so excited to hear him tapping on the shell.

I might need a buddy or two for him. I am not listening to one cry all night.

He is for sure internally pipped because I hear him.
I can't believe this.

So the three week olds have changed again even in the last few days. I think the males are definitely starting to show the red on their chests. Here are a few photos (didn’t feel like catching all 17 to do a forced photo shoot :gig). Anyone else agree male first then female?

:goodpost:
I think the pet/food dichotomy is one of the most arbitrary systems around. Personally, I'd say that what makes an animal a pet (or not) is what their owner thinks of them, not what species they are. Pets are another arbitrary classification, but I digress. (I don't see it as a harmful one. Not all illogical standards have to be evil. I butcher extras regularly for food, and I have had other birds—just a few—that I'd have moved Heaven and Earth to save. Why? I liked them. No other reason. I am under no delusions that their lives were somehow 'worth' more.)

I see no reason why my pet ducks/chickens should be valued as less than a dog just because they don't bark and tear up my furniture. I also don't see why we shouldn't eat unwanted dogs/cats/horses. It makes more sense than letting them strain overcrowded shelters or starve on the streets. I think it's a bigger shame to euthanize them and leave their bodies to rot in the name of 'respect' for their bodies. Just give them a quick bullet and then toss them on the grill. They won't care, they're dead.

Some people say "Well, then how do you draw a line between animals and humans? Why don't we eat our own dead?" First, that's a stupid idea from the viewpoint of transmitted diseases. Second, at some point, everybody has to decide for themselves how lives are valued. I've made my decisions; others have made theirs. No matter if animals are 'friends' or 'food', they should still be treated kindly at all times. There is NEVER a reason to be a jerk to the lives in your charge.
Exactly, you said it better than I could.

Don’t ask what you’re eating, and don’t be a jerk if you serve someone horse. Let them think it’s cow.
My husband's grandma thought it was disgusting to eat goat, so the next time we had her for dinner I made no mention of the meat source. I let her think it was beef roast. She happily ate seconds and complimented me on the delicious roast and when we told her it was goat she was floored. She changed her mind that day.
