➡ Quail Hatch Along🥚

i just finished...yes the gates are frozen, but good thing i went out because bunnies had already emptied the fresh water bottle i gave them this morning!! i put the thawed one on and refilled the 2nd so hopefully they will not run out again before i venture out in the morning!

Yeah mine were so cold lol also I took my gloves off so that might be why lol the shavings were sticking to the gloves so I took them off to put shavings in the little coop which took a while cause the door was still up at first/wasn’t sure I wanted to use the whole thing so I put them in bunch by bunch lol then finally decided to take it off and dump the other half in. :lau

And oh wow that’s good you checked! Their water was frozen too. Need to buy another heated bowl for them hahah

I know right!? It was my first ever hatch too and I was so excited and wanted to keep all the girls!! They thwarted that one :hit

Funny thing was everyone was telling me from the beginning, except maybe a couple people, that I had all boys except one or two, and I didn’t want to believe them but it turned out to be true :lau

It sucks cause there were like 2-3 that I wasn’t sure on and really kinda looked like pullets when they were younger so I had my hopes up that I might have up to 4 girls, or at least 2, but recently even the other one I thought for sure was a girl has proven to be a boy too. Or at least pretty positive now. :hit

And oh wow that’s really interesting!!! These were almost winter, Thanksgiving weekend (end of November this year) but all boys lol

Aw no! It’s worse when you get attached to a certain one thinking it’s a pullet but then find out it’s not :barnie

You never know, hopefully you have better hatches this year, it really is just the luck of the draw. It’s just annoying when you get that dreaded result :gig

Bobwhite are different, if you happen to be talking about a Bob.

He’s a Coturnix (English White)

i don’t wanna go out in the cold again!!! i’m the one that’s been doing it all day! but the birdies need their treats, the bunnies need their treats, the waterers need to be checked again, the garbage needs to go out AGAIN, and the beer pitcher is empty AGAIN! (imagine that 🤣)
I've been out there all day, since noon!!! Lol!!! Working on the new Bobwhite pairs pens..... still not done, and managed to create more work for myself by making it a double layer....

Hawks have been nearby, and saw one soar over. All the roosters & ducks alerted everybody. I hate raptors! They should go to the river or lake and leave my little plot alone.

My 3 incubators are full of fertile eggs..... looks like spring chicks are in my future! (One incubator chicks are someone else's hatch)

Late bloomer?

Possibly, he is an odd Quail!

He’s crowed from 4 weeks old so he’s definitely a male just hasn’t matured at all in the other department haha :gig
I processed some that had teeny tiny testicles while others the same exact age would have huge ones, and some males in a male only pen would still mate the beta males in the absence of females. Maybe he's a beta.

That’s kinda going along the lines of the only reason I can put it down to!

He’s never been around any other quails in his life, he only knows me as the main thing he interacts with and he gets to see the Silkie chicks on warmer days.

That being said, I’ve had males housed alone with no females around at all and they still had foam well before the age he is

Yeah it stunk!! Thankfully I’m not really like super super attached to these babies; I tried not to bond with them too closely in case any were boys, but of course all the best breeds and ones I had wanted to keep were boys! :barnie

And then the one that got killed was one of my favorites and also one I wanted to keep! I knew he was a boy right from the very first day so no surprise there but he was the first to hatch and very sweet! Also the only one that was named and I really wanted to keep him! :barnie

And idk if I’m going to hatch any more haha at least not for a while :lau

But I am planning on keeping at least one boy so I’m sure I’ll want to set their eggs later on! :lau I think I might just wait for a broody hen this time though haha

I’m keeping 3 of the boys and the one girl for now and going to decide which one I want to keep for real later on as they get older and their personalities develop more. But I might also just make a bachelor pen for all of them.
