Does anyone here have some quail pen designs they particularly like? I am looking for a ground-set pen, not a wire floor. I have been having some severe fox trouble of late and I am realizing that my current pens have exceeded their useful lifespan.

Could you build one with the hardware cloth the floor and just fill it with dirt once you put it in its spot?

That is the design of two of my other pens. I rather dislike it; I was thinking of having stiff wire skirts that could be folded down to discourage digging. It would be easier to clean that way.

I've fostered 10+, and they were the same or worse. As are the neighbour's dogs, and the dogs I knew as a child. They're just not for me. I prefer livestock.

Fosters probably aren’t the best example because they’ve been taught bad habits most likely. But that’s understandable, dogs aren’t for everyone.

But I really honestly think a lot of it comes down to training and how they are raised.

For example, Gator, for as much as I loved him, was a bit of a terror. Soooo needy and attention seeking, allowed to do whatever he wanted by my dad, barked constantly (my dad thought “he’s just doing his job ), etc.

I tried to train him and he listened to me mostly so he wasn’t totally untrained but my dad undid everything. If he alone had raised him, I have no doubt he would have been uncontrollable and dangerous.

Meanwhile, DB & SIL’s dogs are all rescues and all perfect angels. They’ve had their challenges and dog adolescence, sure, but they are almost too strict with them sometimes but they’re perfect for it. Never bark. They would if they were allowed but they have never allowed it and they know it. And also because they have multiple dogs, they keep each other occupied and are not needy. They like attention and affection, sure, and will take it when you offer it, but if you ignore them, they’ll just go lay down somewhere. They are not in your face or obnoxious at all.

My friend has two Goldens that are constantly underfoot and in your face or jumping up, begging, barking, pulling, etc. sweet dogs but totally untrained.

So I think how they’re raised factors into it. And of course just breed personality. Some are bred to be needy and cuddly or energetic lol

My dogs are not bad... They will eat a chicken in a heartbeat, I think. (I think my chicken eater is dead already.)

I know for sure they'll swallow a quail whole.

They’re good for brooding and hatching chicks!!

I have a lot of those, admittedly. Five button quail, two parakeets, and two Gouldian finches.

I’m jealous!! The only “ornamental” birds I have are my two parakeets lol
