A friend of mine had some button quail from me. Her female died and she's left with a lonely 4 year old male. She can't find any birds near her, so she ordered eggs for me to hatch and she'll take some home when she comes up to visit.

I'm not going to let them run around in the atrium because:
1 - I'm pretty sure at least one would fall into the pond and drown
2 - My mischief monsters already jump over the counter to get in there, and I'm sure they would love to eat quail.
3 - I can't think of a good way to clean up the poop.

Ah! But you've considered it. Maybe a nice cat exclusion zone with an easy to poop scoop section with sand? Or a cardboard flat of dirt, ah la Kiki?

I'm playing with the idea of an indoor aviary. For now they're going to go in 50 gallon totes that I've modified into button containers. That's how I kept them at my old place. I would really love to get one of these. It would fit nicely in the corner of my house where it's sheltered and it wouldn't take a lot to keep warm in the winter. That's still a distant dream, though. It will have to wait until the IRS isn't taking 80% of my income.

Five new button chicks. I set 10 eggs, 3 quit early, 2 quit, but all 5 that made it to lockdown hatched.
