➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I wouldn't use a heat light in conjunction with a cardboard box

I didn't see this before. No heat lamp! It's a seed grow mat -- like a low-grade heating pad. I put the contraption in the coop tonight, and the chicks seem to like it. :fl

@Morrigan Would you mind keeping track of how much feed you go through for your meaties for me?

I've done it in past years -- I'll try to look up my stats. It's hard to keep track of perfectly because the meat birds and my laying flock get the same food. I know that in past years, when I did all the math -- feed, bedding, cost of chicks + shipping, it all worked about to be about $1.5/pound of meat in the end. Tomorrow, I'll try to find my notes.

@jwyles I didn't find the mention of the sexing for the barred chicks. Did you search and find anything? I've been a wee bit busy. The large head spot on my chick, I thought meant girl. So Dot is now Spot. It was very regular and round. Then the comb sprouted.

Keep in mind these are still guesses since they are mixed heritage. Mutts. And we have no clue who or what laid the eggs. Surprise!

So if Barnyard rooster is solid and mated with the Dominique hens, any barring says boy. Along with that awesome comb at 2 weeks. :hmm

The other one is still a guess. Here's hoping that I don't have Ursuline's luck and get 2 cockerels. :fl

I put the CX out at 1 week. Of course, it was 100°F outside and hotter than that in the garage. Had a huddle box with heating pad inside suspended for them to get underneath. Cut 2 doors so easy escape and no worry about trampling. Worked well the first week. Second week, outside.
Well if it rings true that both came from those parents then that would mean the other is a pullet!

No I haven't. I'm supposed to be studying for a test so I haven't let myself do any extra reading other than BYC... can't get behind on my baluttie thread and all..:lau. but I seriously doubt that rule applies to barred chicks that aren't from a barred mother and father (this would be my guess but again it's an assumption). That being said , like little prairie, I'm betting yours is sex linked and you can tell it's a boy simply from the fact that it exhibits barring head spot. (If this chicks dad roo is mixed with a barred bird in his ancestry though that wont necessarily be 100% accurate either. Could still be a guessing game)

Completely agree....this is my morning commute and my evening commute! If I'm lucky some mornings...I can get off my exit and zoom across all 4 lanes! DE is so small that if I don't....I either wind up in NJ or PA very quickly.....can't have that now.

Cy - don't do as I do (until you're 40 - ish....:gig)
*is totally not 19*

Either way, we are having fun. Little itty bitties running around. My first time watching a broody be a momma. I'm amused and awed.

Like we tell our kids, we aren't perfect parents, but we are learning. Poor Timmy. Let him be an example for you. Follow the rules. Timmy is our fictional kid that didn't make it. Anytime someone broke the rules, we would talk about how Timmy broke the rules. Once. <:lau said in a stern voice>

:lau:lau Can I use Timmy to terrify mine into behaving pleas?

But if dad is a mix he could have a barred grandparent or so on. It's only 100% accurate with first gen sex links.
I know, I said if the rooster happened to be a solid, referring as a hypothetical situation where it didn’t have barring grandparents.
