I haven’t had any issues so far except that my Brinsea spot check thermometer keeps reading about 2 degrees too high (I don’t leave it in permanently, just put it in long enough, like a few mins, for it to settle down and stablilize and read properly, and have checked a few times last night and once this morning) even though the temperature on the incubator says it is at the right temp?? Thinking of ordering another Brinsea thermometer in case mine is faulty and also buying a third one now and a hygrometer because I don’t think I trust the built in one.

The Brinsea Spot Check is supposed to be a very accurate thermometer. It is more likely that your incubator temperature is off than your Brinsea Spot Check.

It is still worth checking the Spot Check for accuracy.

How to Calibrate a Thermometer

Another method is by using a medical thermometer that you feel is accurate (check your own temperature as a verification) and suspend it and the Spot Check in a pan of water at 100°F. Make sure that neither thermometer is touching the pan especially the bottom that is in contact with the heat.

Thanks!! That’s really helpful!! So I should have a second inside the incubator permanently?? So far I don’t find it much work to take the vent plug out, stick the probe in, and check it. But maybe that will get old during the incubation period lol although, also, are the spot checks even calibratable? I don’t think it reads below 90. Maybe I should try the boiling thing. I think it says they are already calibrated though, at least according to them, so idk.

Thanks!! I don’t think the ice or boiling methods will work as it’s range is only 32 C to 40 C But I will try that other method.

But yeah, I think the incubator is off. So should I just set it a degree or two lower than the temperature I want and see if that lowers it??

The vent plug needs to be open especially during lockdown.

Thanks. I thought I read somewhere to leave it in and only remove it at lockdown but idk. So should I remove it at lockdown or just leave it out for the whole incubation period?? Do you think leaving it open would cool the incubator down a little bit??

You need to set the incubator so that the accurate thermometer reads the correct temperature.

If it were mine, I would leave it open all of the time. Others may have a different opinion.
