➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Hubby and I were supposed to go to the zoo today to celebrate his birthday on Wednesday. We both woke up feeling crummy and were dragging our feet to make the 2 hour drive to Houston.. so we stayed home like old farts. Sigh.
Ah well. We had a nice dinner and I finally got my fruity drink.

On another note, I’ve had a fever for almost a week straight and I’m starting to wonder if it’s something worth getting alarmed about. I know I’m always sick but this is getting old, even for me.

You’re not old!! 2 hours each way is far! Plus the time at the zoo. And 4 hours total driving. I don’t think I would have done that either!! Lol most of our zoos (we have several) are within an hour or some, some a little less, and even that is kind of far to me!! So I don’t blame you lol the dinner and drink sounds nice!!

And yes, that fever does sound rather alarming!! I would definitely at least get it checked out!! Have you taken Tylenol or a bath or anything to try to break it!?

A fever that lasts more than three days is cause to see a doctor. You may have an infection without obvious symptoms and sepsis is not something you want to deal with.

BTW, my mom has BTDT. She had a UTI and a cold, she assumed by her symptoms that it was the flu, and she ended up with sepsis. She didn't go in until my dad realized that she was extremely confused and disoriented and took her to the ER thinking she was having a stroke.

I was raised with the wait and see approach to healthcare and it's been a challenge to re-learn when to go in. I just took a kid in for the second time for a persistent sore throat. He never did get a positive strep test but since it had been going on for so long, he got amoxicillin anyway and boom, gone. The rapid test isn't that accurate.

I was out putting chicks on the low roost for the second night last night. I adjusted the door they seem to want to sleep on so it's less flat/comfy and installed an automatic night light because I think the little dorks are just waiting too long to go in and can't see to get on the roost. The baby coop has a clear roof so they've always gone to bed later than the adults (like teenagers ) and the darker conditions inside may be an issue.

Fingers crossed that little bitty light is sufficient and they get this down before we leave!

We're still having issues with pecking order and food but having food in the run is helping as well as ensuring they go to bed with a full crop. I'm considering putting together one of those tote feeders with the PVC elbows so I can leave food out in the run while we're gone and not have it ruined if it rains.

Sigh, the last group was so much less timid about the adults. Moxie went to roost next to the leader of the flock, took a couple pecks but refused to move and that was that. Not sure if it's the slightly younger age, that there are 4 instead of 6, or I don't have a strong leader in the group. But EEs squawk like they're being murdered at all ages and I can't believe the noise when I have to move them.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is one of Street Foods girls is on a nest. They finally found the island was a good place to lay so I may have some babies soon from my own ducks. Plus the three I'm raising and there will be ducks a plenty.

The bad news is I had a quail massacre. I have one lonely quail left. I went and picked up the bodies and found where what I'm assuming is a raccoon got in through the roof. I've had birds in this pen for three years and this is the first time they have gotten in. :(

I'm going to go to TSC and get a bunch of welded wire to cover the entire roof down to the sides and the end gables. Nothing is going to get in this pen again!

So.... what do I do with a single lonely quail? :(

I think you might have to eat him for breakfast.

I'm so sorry this happened.

Good news on the duck eggs though.
