Busy day today.
But best is bringing home the early mom and her Itsy Bitsy baby girl! Vet pulled the calf last night when labor was peaking. Little heifer baby weighs about 50 pounds but big for a 16 month old young momma to have.
Mom wasn't too excited about her little one, has torn a little and was on meds. Itsy Bitsey went all night without nursing because momma was grumpy.
We picked them up, brought them home. Put mom in the squeeze chute with a big helping of cubes and creep feed. She stood still for the baby to nuzzle and suckle what colostrum mom had...maybe a cup. We gave a colostrum bottle...maybe another cup was as much as she could take.
Baby got a bottle again at 1 pm and then nursed her momma in the squeeze chute at 8 pm followed by another helping of supplement.
We have them bedded down together in a big stall in the barn because it is supposed to rain tonight.
The nuzzle and the nursing! Success!

I ended up taking my dog to the vet yesterday. Hubby and son got concerned after they went to go try to sit by her and they called her over to them and she didn't want to move. Which is not like her because she is an attention whore. You look in her direction and she is like, "Oh you want me? Of course you do! Love me!" And she was showing signs of being a little tender around one of her shoulders. So for peace of mind, we took her in. The vet agreed with our assessment that she didn't have any broken bones and didn't feel like any fractures. She might give an occasional limp but for the most part she was walking ok. So she will probably be a little bruised over the next couple of days and gave us some anti-inflammatory meds for her. Also thinks she has some arthritis going on so gave us some recommendations for that going forward. So I feel better.

However.... today... :he:he:he

My little EE, Sunny, got out again. When I went out there to clean the coops, I found her stuck INSIDE and between 2 cinder blocks that we have in front of the big coop as steps. They aren't stacked. Just one in front of the other. I had to pull one of the blocks away from the other and dump her out, trying to be careful of her wing. Needless to say she was stressed and in shock and didn't fight me. I brought her in to assess her and get her some fluids, etc. The wing seems to be ok. She looks to be walking good. And I got her to drink and eat some food. She seems to have calmed down. I'm going to go put her back out with the littles. This week has been something else. I need a break! :barnie
Both have great care from you!

Aww, so glad for the happy outcome. Think mama will take to her or that you've got a bottle baby on your hands?

Awww! :love So happy that you’re able to get the baby to nurse some, even if it isn’t a lot. The beginning is so important and beneficial. I hope those motherly instincts kick in soon and the new mom will eventually accept the baby. :flSuch great news that mom and baby made it through the delivery and are doing ok.

Congrats! Praying that it sticks!
Orphan calves are so stressful to deal with. I had one die in my arms a year or so back after fighting to keep her alive for a few weeks, and I’ve dreaded first-calf heifers since.
