➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

The top brace is cracked, but I have some pieces of glass I could replace it with. It'd probably need to be resealed with adhesive silicone anyway. It's been sitting on it's side, so I worry that it might be structurally compromised. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it.

Ahh okay. That makes sense. Hopefully it’s not structurally compromised and can be salvaged. :fl

Even if it doesn’t hold water, maybe it could be used as a reptile or rodent tank or something? Or for button quail. :D

Went to sleep with iPad in my lap last night. Woke up at 2 am, got caught up and promptly went to bed.

Finally seeing a little much needed recovery in our one eyed bull! Bomber wasn't getting up to walk much, nor was he eating or drinking much.
Hubby thinks he may have cracked a rib or injured his back when he got stuck in the vet's squeeze chute and then had a hard roll when they opened the side gate as he was rousing out of his surgery anesthesia. He walks with a slight limp in his hack left leg and is stiff on the other three legs.He hangs his head when he is standing so we know he is hurting.
A 2000 pound bull can't be moved unless he wants to go.
Bomber is a registered Angus, gentle, easy going boy and has allowed Hubby to give him his penicillin injections while settled on the ground.
Gave him a B complex shot and some Bovine Nutradrench yesterday and more B complex this morning.
Finally yesterday evening Bomber started eating a few cubes and nibbling some hay and alfalfa when we set it down in front of him where he lies on the ground. Same with fresh cold water. Surgery was 6 days ago!
A healthy bull can drink 15 gallons or more of water a day. Bomber would walk to the water trough and then go lie down in the shade...without eating much of anything.
Vet clinic was closed over the Labor Day weekend, so called this morning to get him some Dexamethisone. Gave him 10cc and then 5cc each day until we see improvement.

Vet told us that because of the eye cancer scare in Oklahoma, even though Bomber's eye was removed because of injury, no market would accept him for the sale ring.
So when Bomber reaches his sale age as a breed bull, we will have to have him butchered privately and made into hamburger....that or let him live out his days and bury him on the ranch.
Hubby said we will still get 2 eyed calves out of him until that happens.
Poor Bomber!
Bless your hearts for taking care of him so well, what a lucky fella. He’s gonna have a pretty great life one way or another.
19 weeks, 6#13oz. Hasn't slowed down yet. I managed to get a non-blurred picture of the crazy beast with a yardstick for scale. I wish I had thought of this when we first got him, he's grown so much!View attachment 1897317
What a handsome boy! I love him! And congrats on those teeth falling out, that’s a huge relief. No shark kitty for you.
What even is this face? :lau
Triumph has a similar face.
That’s his “you’ve been taking pictures for way too long without any payment scratches and it’s getting kinda awkward” look.

Busy busy day. I’m exhausted.

Question for all: I have to write a research paper for my animal nutrition class. There’s a list of topics that we can choose from, but my prof said we can bring her ideas for different ones which got me thinking..
Does anyone have any interesting animal nutrition topic ideas (apart from this list)? I was thinking that if I wrote something about poultry then I could convert it into a BYC article. I dunno.

Hahaha tbh that’s probably exactly what he was saying cause he was smiling right before that! :lau Those last 3 are a series. The shutter sound from the first one woke him up so then he was all smiley and happy and so cute with that dazed just woke up look so I took a pic  and then I was trying to get a better picture of him smiling and he made that face! It was definitely on purpose! :lau he’s probably like “uhhhh you woke me up and you’re not even gonna scratch me!? What gives!?” :lau I did end up petting him a lot after LOL tbh I really think he is part Golden. He is so sweet and gentle and the fact he makes the same face as yours just seals it lol

ACV in water. There is actually a really interesting and robust peer reviewed literature on the possible benefits (and negatives) of acidified drinking water for poultry. And I would love to see you do a BYC article that sorts fact from fiction.

Focusing on free range versus grain fed a lot. How about fast food versus vegetable based diet. Grain free / gluten free versus the cave man diet (keto or paleo or word of the month). Throw some people are animal topics at her. Even pigs will get tired of doughnuts after a week. Fat and malnourished? That was the one that puzzled me. Good luck.

Oh, right. Chicken topics. Um. High protein versus normal for broiler production? Nutrition of eggs compared based on feed - grass versus bag. Does grass make chickens happy?

I don’t really have any good suggestions but this is really interesting!! Some good (and some controversial) questions there :lau :D

Also.... research paper already!? :th

Good one! I like this.

I like all these too!!

You know how you always see "Vegetarian Diet" listed on eggs and whole chickens at the store? I think a research paper on how chickens are not vegetarians would be interesting. Raise one bird on veggies only, one bird on an omnivorous diet, and one on nothing but the finest steak. Rare.
When they reach, say, 8 weeks old, butcher them and cook them all the same way. See if they taste different.
Oh, wait. You probably don't have a few months to get this project in order... I like Bone's ACV snopes idea better.
