➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

ACV in water. There is actually a really interesting and robust peer reviewed literature on the possible benefits (and negatives) of acidified drinking water for poultry. And I would love to see you do a BYC article that sorts fact from fiction.
I really like this one. I see a lot of ACV usage that makes me go “hmm,” not just for chickens.
Also, PLEASE bore us with your research findings.
Focusing on free range versus grain fed a lot. How about fast food versus vegetable based diet. Grain free / gluten free versus the cave man diet (keto or paleo or word of the month). Throw some people are animal topics at her. Even pigs will get tired of doughnuts after a week. Fat and malnourished? That was the one that puzzled me. Good luck.

Oh, right. Chicken topics. Um. High protein versus normal for broiler production? Nutrition of eggs compared based on feed - grass versus bag. Does grass make chickens happy?
Nutty, you crack me up. I laughed way too loud at this at 6am this morning.
I’m definitely gonna write a paper on how poor diet effects a pig’s ability to catch criminals.
You know how you always see "Vegetarian Diet" listed on eggs and whole chickens at the store? I think a research paper on how chickens are not vegetarians would be interesting. Raise one bird on veggies only, one bird on an omnivorous diet, and one on nothing but the finest steak. Rare.
When they reach, say, 8 weeks old, butcher them and cook them all the same way. See if they taste different.
Oh, wait. You probably don't have a few months to get this project in order... I like Bone's ACV snopes idea better.
My professor told us that she’s “not a poultry person.” Do you think if I bring her a 3 course chicken dinner it’ll change her mind?
I actually had no idea that they sold “vegetarian diet” eggs and chickens.

Rarely. The cleanup is... irritating.
Yes, it really burns my butt too!

A teenager came up missing last night at bedtime. Didn't do a proper count at supper, so time of missing is unknown. Down to 12 teenagers in the tractor. I've lost 3 chicks, 1 layer and now a pullet this month. No feathers, no nothing for the chicks & teenager. Necropsy this weekend for the layer. Don't see how to get to her earlier.

The sole remaining chick is looking cockerel. Solves a problem. But I want to find the pullet.

Wow they’re big already!! They may end up being bigger than Ziggy if they’re that much younger and already almost his size!! :th

They're big kittens!

I looked and Ziggy was 5#3oz at 15 weeks. At least, I think 15 weeks. I went with the 1st shelter's estimate for my log rather than the vet's (younger) date because I presume an estimate made at 5 weeks is more accurate than one made at 11. Plus, I have reason to believe he was born in foster care so their date may be the actual day.

@NanaKat I can't remember, do youhave access to the parents to know what size they ended up?

Last year I took a class on stable isotope geochemistry and we had to do group projects. One group decided to buy eggs labeled “vegetarian fed” and other ones that did not make that claim so they could compare the chemical signatures and look for differences. Then I gave them eggs from my hens (and some food samples) as a control. I won’t bore bore you with the details, but when they got the results from their analysis, my flock looked like carnivorous little dinosaurs compared to everything else. It was awesome!
I agree with previous comments... please bore us.
I know that when my chickens see rodents, they go into raptor mode. My Hamburgs get gnarly and hunt in pairs.

Are you using like a baby scale? I dont think my kitchen or bathroom scales would be good enough. I have a monster cat. His Christian name is Richard, i Had to change his name(despite how much i dislike doing that to a critter.) He takes down whole wild rabbits  ive seen him with them twice.

Anything they can do to charge more for the eggs/meat/etc. I always wonder if it makes any appreciable difference or if it's more about people feeling better about themselves.

I also want to see research results backing up an utter destruction of BS claims but I suspect that it would do nothing to convince the followers. After all, people keep feeding their chickens DE in spite of clear evidence that it doesn't prevent nor treat worms.

Bore? Bore?? I'll spontaneously combust if you don't give us the details.

Bore bore us please. Although I would like to watch Batty combust, want the details too.

Do you do Phoenix impersonations often?? I think CSA is teasing us.

Rarely. The cleanup is... irritating.

:lau :gig :lau

Thanks for the laughs, guys.

But I too want the details lol

X2 lol

And yeah they’re super common now and I think even Purina or one of the big ones took animal products out of their chicken feed. It’s a huge selling point that something is vegetarian fed lol

Okay at first I thought you meant real teenagers, like humans, like your kid went missing or something, OR some random kid from your area went missing, and I was like  :th :hit :hugs

But then I read a little further and realized you meant chickens :lau :gig :lau

Still :hit and :hugs though.

They really are!

That makes sense!! You’re probably right haha and wow they seem pretty similar then but definitely a little bigger ha

I agree with previous comments... please bore us.

That sounds so cool!!

Christian name!?

And adult rabbits!? :th

Yeah it probably doesn’t do anything but make them feel better lol which is stupid cause you’re eating the meat and eggs so what good does it being vegetarian do!? Clearly you’re not! :lau

Unless they’re one of those ones that only eat eggs or only eat fish or eat eggs and dairy lol

And yeah I agree haha tbh I used to somewhat believe it when I was younger or at least like thought it sounded good/true but then one day my dad was like.... it gets wet inside the digestive system, how could it dehydrate/cut anything? And I was like huh, never thought of that :lau

I have a super accurate digital kitchen scale. It's not easy to weigh a cat on it (I use a container and tare method with a lot of patience!) It's good up to 25#, I think?

Our previous barn cat Sparkle took down a grown rabbit at least once, I found her in the driveway eating it around midnight. She wasn't a big cat at all! But, she knew how to kill an animal quickly. I had the great luck of seeing her catch a mouse once. She was still, then miraculously airborne, then had it pinned. There was no playing, she just dispatched them immediately and off with their heads. That was the cat that was dumped with a flea collar and no ID so we knew nothing at all about her other than she seemed to need a home.

Much too logical. I like you. I second the motion.

People are becoming 10 second whizzes. No follow up. Whatever is in the headlines. The retractions and apologies on page 101 don't get read. oh, look. a squirrel. and off they go into oblivion to perpetuate the insanity.

Using your example, we need a believer to intentionally contract worms :sick. Then confirm it with a fecal float test (vets do it). Then only treat themselves with DE. No pepper flakes. No alcohol. No kerosene. Would a month work? After a month, do another float test. Then repeat with pepper flakes, alcohol and kerosene. Carefully controlled doses, of course. Should be done in a year easy. Volunteers? I'm out. I've got, uh, other business that I can't miss. Yeah, other business. That's the ticket, other business.
