➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

You know how you always see "Vegetarian Diet" listed on eggs and whole chickens at the store? I think a research paper on how chickens are not vegetarians would be interesting. Raise one bird on veggies only, one bird on an omnivorous diet, and one on nothing but the finest steak. Rare.
When they reach, say, 8 weeks old, butcher them and cook them all the same way. See if they taste different.
Oh, wait. You probably don't have a few months to get this project in order... I like Bone's ACV snopes idea better.

:lau :gig :lau

I love this!!!

I don't have room in the coop to put a cage so I am going to have to get creative. It will probably be more work on my behalf just because I am not really prepared for this situation. Do you think it would be ok to have her in a cage during the day and let her out to be with everybody and roost with then at night time since I can block off access to the nest boxes once I am sure everyone has laid for the day?
You can always try.

The chickens scraped that Sugar Kiss melon bare. They ate the Orangedew melon, rind and all. I think they liked them :lau
They can quickly turn a watermelon skin paper thin.

My goodness I love this picture. My broody girl, Daisy :love

Yes, she has that "don't you dare reach your hand in my nest area!"

19 weeks, 6#13oz. Hasn't slowed down yet. I managed to get a non-blurred picture of the crazy beast with a yardstick for scale. I wish I had thought of this when we first got him, he's grown so much!View attachment 1897317
Weighed my two 15 week old kitties. Hazel weighs 5.2 pounds and Pomme Tom weighs 5.8 pounds. They grow so fast!

Yes they prolly will. The heat may be breaking by then but bring summer clothes and a jackrt just incase. Just this week were running 98 actual temp no telling with heat index. So yeah be prepared for more warm than cold
Thank you for the information! Looking forward to our sibling get together. We take in the sights during the days and play killer bridge at night when we take a trip together.

While out filling water tubs late this afternoon, we had a visitor....a pristine white homing pigeon. She was smaller than other homers we have seen. She had a red leg band and may have separated from other homers released.
She landed in the drive between the ducks and the free ranging chickens. The chickens ignored her. The ducks were curious and followed her around as she picked thru the gravel in the drive. When she flew up to the barn roof I set out some mixed grains and a bowl of water up on a ledge near her. After nibbling and drinking our visitor flew to the northwest.
We often have homing pigeons on maiden flights simply drop in for a rest.
A few years ago a grizzle homer visited. He had lost several flight feathers and was tired. We put him in a cage and cared for him (feed, water, and treated for mites) until we could locate the owner using his leg band numbers. Then we met the owner halfway to return the homer to his owner...love a happy ending.

That is awesome! So nice of you to take care of them like that! :love poor guy must have been pretty far from home! How do you tell if they’re lost or just stopping by? I mean, obviously in his case it was pretty obvious he was very far and tired, but with the others? I’d be tempted to “rescue” them all and probably do more harm than good hah not steal them of course, find the owners or whatever, but probably unnecessary as most probably find their way home on their own?

Last year I took a class on stable isotope geochemistry and we had to do group projects. One group decided to buy eggs labeled “vegetarian fed” and other ones that did not make that claim so they could compare the chemical signatures and look for differences. Then I gave them eggs from my hens (and some food samples) as a control. I won’t bore bore you with the details, but when they got the results from their analysis, my flock looked like carnivorous little dinosaurs compared to everything else. It was awesome!

Bore? Bore?? I'll spontaneously combust if you don't give us the details.
