➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

I misunderstood this post earlier.
MY BAD.

Nutty said his birds were friendly didn't he?

I am a firm believer in you can't tell if a bird is going to be nice and or skittish or whatever until they are grown.
All chicks go through different stages at different ages.
Ah ok. I’ll probably just stick with EE. I mean, they ARE beautiful. If they’re flighty then whatever, I’ll cuddle my barred rocks lol.

Do you have any recommendations? I know my slimmer breeds (leghorns, EE, SLW) never really suffered but they were also too flighty for my liking.

But but but...they look so different!

lol

How about Australorps instead of EE?

We also got Australorps as well. One is so dark it looks like an Ayami Cemani

They’re okay personality wise. I love our Langshans but they don’t handle the heat well at all.

We have one RIR and two NHR and they have good personalities and they are handling the heat well.

Hey cowboy...is my yellow guy in these pics?
If so I think I will :hitnow.
Do I see black legs too?
Black legs, not really? Blue and a darker grey slate looking thing. Do you need pictures? I wouldn't consider it black, but I am confused by the black and partial black combs. Clean legs. Why would they put silkie into the mix? I'm confused.

Friendly. No. I feed mealworms and get mobbed. Have one that is chill. The other five only like being fed. I will pick them up when they are near me. They are only near me when baited. We are working through that awkward stage. I open the tractor and they mob around the garden. Dust bathe and generally check things out. A couple hop on top then flew 6' high for 10 feet. Methinks a wing clipping is in the works.

Yes, yellow girl is in the middle picture on the right. She is still the only one with muffs, but the beard is sparce. That picture is a week old. She has lost the rest of the baby fluff. Looking sleek now. I'll see if she is available for a photo shoot next week. Maybe a July 4th spread?

We have 2 redheads, 2 brunettes, blond (Kiki's) and one that is peppered. I like the coloration. Personalities are still shifting. Really, need to spend more time around them. Will move them to the big chicken flight cage in 2 weeks. Then start the shared playtime. Goal is to integrate over the next month.

We started with 11 Barred Rocks and culled down to 4. 3 were very curious and first to the door to greet us. Really liked them. The light red (golden sex links, I am now convinced) are the worst. The red sex links are right there with the BR. By getting the larger numbers, we saw the wider range of personalities. The friendly ones stick out. The only ones I don't care for are the light reds. They are the lowest on the pecking order too. All 3.

Now, a short year later, the dark red (sex link?? RIR??) runs to the gate. If I treat call, the BRs push her out of the way to get the treat. All but the light reds will rub the chest. Even a few of the Leghorns are friendly.

Miss Sunshine is dying :hit not right this minute, but soon. The vet said she has a tumor on her spleen, cancer. We could take pictures and run tests to how much it is spreading elsewhere. We could surgically remove her spleen. None of it really changes that she is dying. For now she is lying in the tall grass in the shade waiting for a vole to come out of its hole.
:( :hugs

Oh no! I’m so sorry, it is never easy. :hugs We just went through that same ordeal with cancer last week in our Basset Hound :(. She lived a good 15 long years being fat and happy! I’m sure Miss Sunshine has an amazing life with you. :)

Edited - “loved” to “lived”

So sorry about your pup. :hugs Remembering the good times and how much they loved life with their humans definitely helps the grief.

Most definitely! It was very hard but I know it was the best decision for her as she was to the point that she couldn’t walk any longer. She’s now happy, running around once more. :)

Aww. Yes she is, they’re all doing what they love! Knowing when to let go is so important.. I know my ferret boy is sleeping in golden retriever hair right now haha.

When I worked at the vet clinic, one of the most heartbreaking things I saw was an elderly woman in hysterics over her dog. The poor lab was 16 or something, couldn’t walk, blind, deaf, totally incontinent, constantly in pain.. the owner was screaming and sobbing and refused to let her go. :(
