➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

So do you raise rabbits for meat or other reasons?

And why do people raise pigeons?

Social/cultural/regional differences make it hard for me to understand why anyone would raise rabbits or pigeons, just trying to understand. I figured I'd go straight to the source here and ask.

We raise them for meat, as well as sell them to people as pets.
We bought out a small rabbit farm a couple months ago with about 29 rabbits, sold some at auction, sold some as pets locally, kept some. This one who's had 2 litters now was actually a free bunny the fiance's friend gave us - because it was "infertile". They also gave us 3 free hutches they had which helped a lot, though we also have other rabbit pens too.

We mostly have New Zealands (meat/pets), and traded a pair of Californians for a pair of Jersey Wooly/Angoras (pets) a couple weeks ago. Going to pick up a pair of silver fox rabbits in the next couple weeks.

We actually had roasted rabbit in white wine with potatoes, garlic, & red onion for dinner last night. Had injected it with a garlic herb marinade the night before also.

Many, many years ago but not now. I can't even get any cottontails to hang around because all the neighbor's cats think my place is the number one place to hunt. I do have a jackrabbit that hangs around down in my field.
Someone gave us 5 baby cottontails they found in their yard, almost ran them over with the riding mower. We bottle fed them for a bit, they grew pretty well. But they must have contracted something because they died off 1 by 1, even the healthiest looking ones went downhill. Would have been kinda cool to have tame little cottontails on the farm.

Do rabbits get diseases like chickens?

I think there are a few out there they can get, we haven't gotten too deep into the rabbits yet. When the cottontails started dying, someone who's raised rabbits a lot longer said they probably contracted some kind of internal infection or disease they passed around to each other. We had one named McDouble with Cheese because he was a chunker (shoulda named him Big Mac lol), figured he was guaranteed to make it. Sucked losing all of them after many middle of the night wake up feedings!

I guess tomorrow is hatch day for my quail egg (was two but I am almost 100% positive that one is gone.)
I just candled quickly (since it is suppose to be in lockdown) and I did not see movement. I do see a little tiny bit of veins near the air sack still.

I finally got caught back up... this thread just takes off sometimes!!

The fake dog is even faker than my fake dog... My fake dog is 13 pounds! I have 14 pound cats (who would probably love to eat the less than 2 pound fake dog...)!
He is barely real.
I really don't think he will make it to two pounds.
:th

I went ahead and opened up the quail egg that I was pretty sure had quit.
