Yes, the housing can be intense. I bounced from cage to cage before biting the bullet and getting a Critter Nation.. never looked back. Truly the Rolls Royce of rodent housing. Before the hammie she was begging for a rat. I ALMOST let her have one but what deterred me was the size housing the need. We have two dogs and a huge fish tank and 4 people crammed into my tiny little 1100 sq ft pad and I just couldn't figure out how to fit something that size. Little bear our Syrian ended up getting an entire 40g breeder to himself which was bad enough. That's what I'm taking to the lps to get rid of. I'm so ready for it to be gone. Anyway I hope the gerbil works out. I think they are less bitey than the dwarf hamsters which is what we were thinking of so we are going to try it out.itll be loved more than most I know so a least there's that as a silver lining.

I haven’t been bitten by a gerbil.. yet (knock on wood). In my experience they are very similar to chinchillas: cute but very quick and flighty, definitely more of a “look don’t touch” pet.
Dwarf hamsters are absolutely more bitey. Why such small obnoxious rodents are such popular pets over much more cuddly options, I have no idea.
(Actually I do have an idea.. cute things sell. Sigh.)
