➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

We finally kicked the littles out to the little coop. They are so happy to have more room to run around in. We have learned from the last 2 groups an efficient way to get them to go up into the top part of the coop to sleep on their own. We took them out and let them play during the day but brought them in at night for the first 2 days since we had that cold snap come through. During those 2 days, we took a couple of them and put them up there and let them come down on their own. Then it was just a matter of time for them to go up and explore the top area on their own. The 3rd day, the first night out their on their own, we have a few "night lights" in the top so they can see the door to go in. They are just mild solar stake light tops that give off a little glow. Not super bright but bright enough. The 4th night, we take one of the lights away. Last night, 5th night, only 1 light up top. Tonight we won't use a light at all and see if they'll go up on their own. I expect they will. But I tell you what. Elvis has flown over the fence in to their area a few times now. :smack Thankfully it is a decent enough area where they can go hide up top in the coop or run away from him in the bottom area. He hasn't tried to stalk to attacked them but he did give one a peck or so when it got too close to him. Which totally freaked me out! I'm glad I check on them multiple times a day so I was able to get him out of the area. He got in there 3 times yesterday. AND.... the littles have gotten out a few times. :barnie These chicks are a lot braver and more adventurous than all of the others. We are definitely going to have to do some tweaking to their fenced in pen area. :he

I just block them into their coop the first few days to home them and then give them run access. I'm starting 3-day olds in a juvenile coop so these are young chicks exploring the run and knowing how to return to their coop. I haven't ever had to herd one back in at dusk, they know what to do.

Oh, and they have a hardware cloth run enclosure. Too many rat snakes and such here to even consider less protection. I supervise shared ranging with the adults and hope to merge them a little bit younger than the last batch went. Fingers crossed, we have a vacation the end of May and I want to be done before we go!
 
I've read lots of posts about that method. If I had a bigger grow out coop for them it probably be a good way to do it. This works for me. I have a hard time letting them grow up as it is lol. So many people are like, "omgosh I get them out of the house/brooder as soon as possible" and I'm over here like, "I like their little peep peeps" and "I don't mind cleaning up after them more frequently to have them in a little bit longer". :lau It's amazing how smart and adaptable the little boogers are. They have to be for survival.

It’s the beginning of the homestretch, official finals begins a week from today. Next week I meet with my summer research mentor and he’ll give me the run down on everything we’ll (and I’ll since he mentioned some independent projects for me) be doing for the three month period.

House hunting is been stressful, and unfortunately my school work has been reflective of my highly stressed self. My gen chem 2 grade is....not great. At least I’m passing at this point. All of my other grades are B’s and above though.

@Tesumph I hope you are doing alright, especially with that tornado being close to A&M, been thinking about you a lot lately!
 
We ended up grabbing a leftover piece of woven fencing that we had lying around and wrapped it around 3 sides of the hardware cloth fence that we had around the little coop. It's a lot taller. We have a small section that is still just the hardware cloth fence so we can step over and get in there while we try to figure out what to use for a "door".
This week has been something else. Put the littles outside to stay. :clap I had a birthday and a lovely dinner out with my hubby and kiddos. :yesss: We ordered cords, stole, etc accessories for my son's honors stuff and picked up his cap and gown for his upcoming college graduation. :celebrate Stressing/anxious about that. Unfortunately they only give so many invitation tickets to each student. :barnie I understand why. I mean, if you only have so much room then you can only hold so many people. I just feel bad that we have to pick and choose who can come and who can't. We will probably do a dinner get together type thing afterwards. Maybe grill out or something. We'll do something.
My hubby will be out of town all next week for work so we are prepping for that. That's always fun :duc. He won't be back until late Fri night and our son's graduation is Sat. morning, but at least he will be back in time. We still haven't gotten our tractor back from the dealer. I still haven't broken ground to start my garden. We don't have a tractor to till it. I feel soooo behind. It's crazy how it sometimes seems like stuff happens all at the same time. All you can do is take a deep breath and remember, you can only do what you can do. :old

Sry the house hunt isn't going so hot. Hopefully the RIGHT place will come along and in the long run, the effort will be worth the hunt.
:celebrate on you being in the homestretch of your schooling. Hang in there, you're almost done. You got this!
Wish I had some better words of wisdom. Sometimes I want to say something profound and inspirational and all I can do is :hugs.
