Every part of the country has their own names for critters. I am not aware of a black milk snake. Other than garter snakes, our most common snake was the black rat snake which we referred to as a black snake.

they may have been black rat snakes but you know how old wives tales go.....i was told that they were witnessed to have sucked a cows teat thus earning the name cowsucker
