Jaxson shook his head slowly, not understanding. He was about to argue and ask for a deeper explanation, but didn't. He knew what she meant. The diamond band on her finger wasn't their mother's.
"You were engaged, weren't you." Jaxson said quietly.
Vanessa's reaction was subtle. She straightened slightly and glanced at his face, then nodded once.
All the secret outings she had made, the one on one talks with Mrs. Weston that he and Amy used to whisper about, the abrupt leaving, made sense now, Jaxson realized. He took her hand in his and looked at the freshly cleaned band. "That's what you couldn't handle, being around them after Ben..." He felt terrible now, having held her at blame in his mind for that day. It wasn't jealousy that had forced her to break off with the family, but heartbreak.

(Ah. Sounds interesting :p )

Amy resumed the story while walking from one counter to the other. "The following morning was strange; dreamlike, almost. Breakfast was quick, then Vanessa and my mom hurried out the door to see if they could intervene on Ben's behalf, but they were too late. Nessie had been lied to, I think, in order to have the execution go smoother without her pushing her way in as she did with my dad. That day went by so fast yet terribly slow. I honestly can't remember much except saying good bye to them." Amy stopped her pacing to turn to Artemis. "I felt abandoned by them; by him. He was the brother I had gained, then lost. What hurt the most was that neither he nor I were at fault and that we weren't able to contact each other. For years after I blamed Vanessa, thinking she thought the separation of us necessary." She chuckled, not out of humor but from realization. "In reality it was none of our fault. This war, if only it could be stopped. I know my story is only one of so many of people who have lost family."

(He's interesting, I mean it's interesting, yeah. That's what I meant...)
Artemis listened until Amy completed telling her side of the story. There was a long silence before Artemis spoke up. "I don't think their the people you once knew, atleast, I hope not. I can't imagine you would endorse the people who are different from those who hurt you so many years ago by killing your father and brother." Artemis whispered, staring deeply into Amy's eyes as she tried to understand the truth.

(Come on Jaxson, it took you six years to figure this out. I figured out that Ben and Vanessa were together five posts ago :p)

"I cut them off because I couldn't handle it, and for your safety," Vanessa explained.
She was tearing up, Jaxson noted, and he reached a hand across to pat her shoulder gently. "Couldn't handle what?" He asked after a moment of silence.
"I couldn't handle the deaths, all of them. Our parents, Mr. Weston, then Ben." Vanessa tried to calm herself, took a deep breath. "You never saw it, but I did. Amy didn't support her mom's notions of the war. She was too much her father's daughter, and I didn't see that ending anywhere good. That's why we left, because I feared you were finding yourself too attached, and I couldn't bear to have you go through what I did."

(haha)

"No, now you're getting things confused," Amy corrected her. "The Poles did not kill my family. My family and they were all about what the CMI was doing. We were brought up with the knowledge that that side was best and right. It was later that my family split of their own accord. Vanessa did her best to get my father out and she would have done her best for my brother, but as I said, I believe she was purposefully kept away from his execution. When you were imprisoned, did either of them ever physically harm you? The mental pain cannot be blamed on them, for I bet they weren't the ones who turned you in."

Artemis shook her head in disagreement, and rose from her seat. "Just because they didn't, doesn't mean they wouldn't." She whispered quietly before leaving the room to clean one unkept table as a means of escape from the conversation.

Simeon looked at her, and said slowly "I'm sorry for putting you in all of this." He continued "Brooklyn, I know this might seem kind of weird, but I think you're really cute." He didn't care if she didn't think the same, he just wanted her to know.

Brooklyn nodded her head slowly, dwelling on his words before blushing at them. She smiled at him and then directed her gaze back to the road.
