Artemis shook her head in disagreement, and rose from her seat. "Just because they didn't, doesn't mean they wouldn't." She whispered quietly before leaving the room to clean one unkept table as a means of escape from the conversation.
Amy sighed with disappointment as Artemis got up and left. She had just told this girl, practically a stranger, her story in the hopes of helping her understand a mutual acquaintance, but it seemed it did nothing. She got up and went to the cash register to count tips and to be able to talk to Artemis. "Besides what you mentioned earlier, what do you have against him? Please don't tell me that that is all because I know there's more that you aren't saying." She hoped whatever Artemis had to say would explain Jaxson's sudden appearance today of all days.

Artemis stiffened as Amy was heard walking out of the kitchen. "I don't want to talk about it." She muttered while scrubbing a table, her mind was made up. Artemis could not be convinced by anything Amy said or did to confide in someone who would disagree with her no matter how ugly the truth was.

Amy knew she could easily resort to meaner methods to get what Artemis had to say out of her, but she wasn't like that and therefore would not. "Very well then. But if you do want to talk about it, I'm a good listener," she said, smiling softly. She slid the money from the tip jar into an envelope, leaving a little bit to start off tomorrow. "It's nearly closing time anyway so I'm not going to reopen today," she explained.

Artemis nodded her head in silent thoughtfulness. "Do you think it would be safe enough for me to take a walk through the city?" She asked Amy's counsel softly as she turned from the freshly cleaned table. Knowing that the coffee wouldn't be reopened tonight meant that Amy wouldn't need her help, and eager to enjoy the freedom she hadn't had the last week, she wanted to take advantage of the opportunity.

Amy shrugged, her face showing unsureness. "I'm not sure. You look different enough to me, but I don't have your mug shot nor am I out to get you. If you're desperate to get out, then take a hat and glasses," she suggested. "Oh, and I meant to tell you earlier, but help yourself to my closet. I've got so many things I don't wear."

"Thanks." Artemis smiled in gratefulness. "I will." She took the dish cloth to the kitchen after completing her chores and went to the apartment to change. She found a floral dress in her size, peep toe boot-like heels, and a floppy hat to match along with some sunglasses she eventually found near the door. She criticized her appearance in the mirror before leaving the building, but was glad to finally be able to dress up. She never considered herself beautiful but spending a week in a cell she was sure her looks had decreased even more without showers, or the relief of makeup to hide what she considered her naturally unattractive features. But somehow, without makeup, and her ppearance dirty made her true beauty shine brighter than any makeover ever could.
(Do you want to skip ahead to when she returns, or have her run into V or J?)

With Artemis gone now, the place was silent except for the sound of Amy's steps as she walked up the wooden staircase. She was grateful to have a guest, she realized. The sound of two voices, even if they were disagreeing sometimes, was better than just one talking itself.
Amy settled into the corner of the sofa and picked up her book to read but was unable to focus. The afternoon's conversation had sent her mind reeling, both for good and for bad. She felt better, having relayed the past's events to a willing ear, but she also discovered more questions, unknowns to be discovered. Why hadn't Jaxson come sooner? Or at least arranged a meeting between them after that day? And what was it that Artemis held against him so?

( V XD )

Artemis walked along the city sidewalks, enjoying the sounds and sights that were all around her. She realized now how greater she missed her freedom than she had thought. Watching the people walk past her, each with their own stories, made her realize in a new light, how precious life truly was. Every moment of it.
(Oh, no )

He felt terrible now, having held her at blame in his mind for that day. It wasn't jealousy that had forced her to break off with the family, but heartbreak.
Silence stretched between the two of them in the large apartment. The clock ticked on but neither seemed to hear it as they were both absorbed in their own thoughts.
"Yes, we were engaged," Vanessa finally said softly. Predicting his next question, she added, "Two years. For two years, before he and his dad left. He wasn't going to leave, he told me later, but then there was a slip up at work and he had to get out. He and Mr. Weston went to wherever Stephanie was hiding out with her group. It was odd for me, the only one with the knowledge of where everyone was when you and I aren't even related to them. And after, I was the only one who knew exactly why we left. Amy's mother thinks I left because it was too hard for me to be around them, but I had other reasons as well." She met Jaxson's eyes and held the gaze as she continued. "I left because of the association. News spread about the family, how half of them joined the contenders. The remaining family were put under watch, and still are, as far as I know."
Jaxson pretended not to be surprised but took note. He'd mention that tomorrow when he saw her.
Vanessa looked up at the clock then stood abruptly. "Let's get supper started," she said decidedly without a word more about the previous moment's conversation.
Jaxson stood as well and took their glasses to the sink. He needed time to go over what had been said, but clearly Nessie wasn't going to allow that.
