Yes, it is possible.

It could be done commercially on a large scale, if the breeders decide they care (but that probably will not happen.)

In a backyard flock, if you buy golden sexlink chicks, you might find that some of them have a normal lifespan (equal to other chickens.)

And if you breed your own, you can cross breeds in a way that gives the same sex-linked coloration but without such extreme laying ability and hopefully without the tendency to health problems.
What would you cross to still get very good layer, large everyday egg? The color is cute and they are bigg'o girls lol. Barred Rock and RIR? 😁😁😁😁 please say yes cause I got those. BR roo, RIR girl 😁😁😁😁😁

Thanks! He’s a whiting true blue and she is a black copper marans. They’re both under a year old.
Hahaha ha, I was wayyyy offff. The chicken from the beginning of the thread. Beautiful, congrats, they look robust. Did you keep all of them?

Edit: I just went through the thread. Quite an adventure. I can't wait for my chick to start having babies. Your chickens are stunning. Thank you for sharing this journey with us.

Thanks! I have a small flock of 5 whiting true blues and 2 black copper marans pullets. Also with 14 chicks, most are Easter eggers and some are pure black copper marans. I plan to keep all the pullets from this last hatch and then in the fall I should have around 13 layers and 1 rooster.

Honestly, to get really good layers with better longevity, I would probably just start with commercially produced sexlinks. Keep them for at least two years, and after that breed from whichever ones were still in good health. Each additional year that they stay in good health, hatch more chicks from them. That would get you the genetics for good egg laying, and you would only be breeding from the ones that do maintain good health for multiple years.

For reasonably good layers, use any breeds that are also reasonably good layers. Yes, your Barred Rock rooster and Rhode Island Red hen will probably give chicks that lay about as well as either parent breed. Chicks will look about like Barred Rock hens, but might have some leakage of other colors (red, gold, extra white--any of those are possible.)
