📚 BYC Library 📚

I’m almost finished with To Kill a Mockingbird. I mainly read classics since they are free or cheap. It’s been impossible to get a library card here because of the pandemic.
Have you read True Grit? It shares some similarities with TK/Mockingbird: fast-paced, lots of good dialogue, and female narrator. I think it's also considered a classic, so maybe it would be easier for you to get your hands on :)

Having written a book (never published), I find the craft fascinating.
To have written a book is a pretty huge accomplishment! 😲
If you don't mind my asking, why never published?

Love this idea!

And here come my recommendations:

The Lost World and all of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, a very interesting and versatile personality. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Conan_Doyle
I love Sherlock Holmes! I took a course called Crime & Detective Fiction for college and we read a few of his stuff and some other ones too and I loved it. I’ll have to find the list of the other stuff we read haha

A list of my favorites and why I like them.

Favorite series:

1. The Lunar Chronicles
I read this back in 2019, but the plot is similar to what has happened this past year, but much worse.
It is set way in the future where there are cyborgs, anroids, and very advanced technology.
There is a deadly virus that has plagued the earth for over 10 years. Anyone who gets it is sure to die. And the moon has been colonized and soon became it's own sort of country. If you've read/watched the hungar games series the aristocratic people of the capital are very similar to the people of Luna. The queen on Luna is also evil :)
Cinder, a cyborg, is the ✨main character ✨ and her story is very similar to Cinderellas.
Each book in the series is based off fairytales.
If I continue typing I might spoil it, but it has a great story. I love all the characters and their personalities.
I could not put this book down once I started. The first few paragraphs and I was hooked.

2. Percy Jackson
This was one of my first longer series of books which I really enjoyed. I've read it many times since then.
It's about a boy, twelve year old Percy Jackson, that finds out he is a demigod. Odd things had happened to him his whole life. He finds Camp Half Blood and soon finds himself on a quest across America with his friends Grover and Annabeth. He has to fight monsters from Greek mythology along the way.

I love that you get to learn about Greek mythology along with Percy since he knows little about everything that is happening as well. And seeing (reading?) as Percy and Annabeths relationship grows stronger. This is a series I could read over and over again and not get bored.

3. Divergent
I'm still reading this one. I am currently half way finished the first book, and it's already easily a favorite.
I probably won't be very good at describing it, but I'll try.

In this world there are 6 factions. In each faction the people have very different values and beliefs. The main character, Beatrice (later goes by Tris) is from Abnegation (selfless), Erudite (intellectual), Dauntless (brave), Candor (honest), and Amity (peaceful).
At 16 she has to choose between staying in her faction or a new one.
I feel like I'm going to spoil it, so y'all can Google it :)

I stayed up until 4am reading this.

Favorite book:

1. Heartless
This book waa written by the same author as the Lunar Chronicles.
I don't know if it was just me, but this book seemed to play with my emotions.
This is probably my number one favorite. I feel like my description won't do it justice and I'm tired of writing descriptions so here's one from the Google
Heartless, by Marissa Meyer, is the imagined back story of Lewis Carroll's character the Queen of Hearts from his novel Alice in Wonderland. The story follows Catherine as a young woman who falls in love with the King's new joker.

I deleted the end part because I feel like it kinda spoils. Idk.

Some books I would like to read after watching the movies (not in oder):

1. Maze Runner
I watched the movies not long ago and they were pretty good, so I suspect the books will be even better. I did not expect there to be so many zombies though lol.

2. The Hunger Games
Probably my favorite movie series.
Tired of writing so here's wikipedia's description
The Hunger Games is a series of young adult dystopian novels written by the American author Suzanne Collins. The series is set in the Hunger Games universe, with the first three novels being a trilogy following teenage protagonist, Katniss Everdeen

Shizzle sticks, I was going to add another but now I've forgotten :)

Sigh. I queried a lot of agents, but none were interested. Though one said my writing was "strong." :)

I thought about doing the self publish thing... didn't. Now so much time has passed that some of the computer stuff is veeeerrrryyy dated. Tape back up?!?! :lau

I've started three other books ( a sequel and two totally different, unrelated) and just.... haven't been writing much.

I have found that the hard part for me is getting stuff on the page (screen, I guess). I'm not a writer, I'm a rewriter. I want to polish the sentence until it gleams. Makes the going very slow. If I could just dump the bones onto the screen, I would get farther along.

I would agree with the agent that said you have strong writing, it shows through here on BYC, I think! 👍
