1 day old chick doing a split

Thank you! The chicks left leg won’t even bend like the right one. It’s just straight out. So idk honestly is this will fix the issue :(
Eggcessive always give the best advice. :highfive:

I personally wont fix splay leg. I cull for it. I have spent too much time just to have things not work out or get worse with age. My birds breed and I don't want the poor genetics among my stock. But that's a fairly hard core view that not everyone shares and you said you were willing to do whatever to help it, so figured it may not be an appropriate suggestion for you. However should you decide things aren't improving, I do consider it the most humane way to help them out. :hmm

I too would crush or wet the feed. Hang in there! :fl

but I'm not sure if I should redo the hobble because I don't think it's really helping his issues.
The hobble is a temporary support to be removed in a few days and see if the legs can maintain their position on their own.

The stiffness you keep mentioning is what makes me think your effort might be futile. But no shame in trying your best as long as you can or culling if that is what's needed. :hugs

Do you have chickens of your own already?

It does sound like nothing may work for him. I would remove the hobbles and everything, and give it chick vitamins, and see if it can learn to get around.

My only experience with splay leg was in a bantam mille fleur rooster. He learned to walk fine in about 4 days, and lived about 6 years, watching over my bantam hens and Polish. I am so glad that I helped him, and we miss that little guy.

I have culled a couple of chicks who seemed brain damaged, continually arched their backs, and did not respond to standing in a cup or other treatments. I think that most of us with smaller flocks may want to at least try to help for few days, to see if they can improve.

@EggSighted4Life @Eggcessive I have him in a sling/chair currently without the hobbles and got some of that polyvisol without the iron and he's even perkier now and his eyes are opening more- ugh he wants to drink and eat and even bites the syringe so it's obvious he wants to live. Let's hope this stuff helps in some way and a miracle happens! :(

I would add the hobbles back otherwise the legs won't have any chance of correcting is my understanding.

Vitamins almost always offer huge instant perk ups. That's awesome that he is wanting to eat! :thumbsup

I will do that for sure! I have him at work with me, so I will make him a new one here in a few. He cracks me up cuz he falls asleep face first in his food dish, then I snap my fingers and he wakes up shakes his head and then goes back to eating again LOL :)

I'm seeing boots for curled toes, but not seeing the legs hobbled together. Hobble his legs together, and keep them on for a few days. I'd give extra vitamins too, like Nutri Drench.

Thank you! Where exactly should I put the hobble? His legs are kind of "uneven" due to one not being able to bend and once that bends. I had one on him last night, and it just wasn't working very well.

You are going to need to be the judge of whether you can put hobbles on or not. Pictures of him in his sling might be helpful if we can see anything. Can you bring his legs a little closer together? He obviously does not sound like the normal chick with splayed leg is one leg will not bend. Physical therapy done gently might help. I will look for some info for that type of leg deformity. Sometimes they get a twisted tibia, or varus valgus deformity, but I don’t know what it is called if the joint is frozen.

Regardless of one not being able to bend, or them not being exactly even, you should still be able to hobble the legs.

Cut a thin strip of vet wrap long enough to go around the chicks legs, leaving about 1 1/4 inch area in the middle, then press the middle together.
