I have a flock with 6 BR a year old, and then 10 others 14-16 weeks old.

One of the BR hatched 4 chicks nearly 2 weeks ago.

I'm having a problem with one of the BR hens, who is a bit overweight and may or may not be laying right now- I do't often catch them in the act, so I can't say for certain.

George was fine earlier this evening when I went out with some cantaloupe and chopped frozen grapes- the heat index was into the 110's today. I also put out more hillbilly air conditioners- had several scattered around today. George was normal during all of my trips outside and ran to me for treats.

When I went out to lock up, I found her just inside the pop door, laying, panting, and prone. I see that her left leg is working normally, but it seems as though her right leg is not. She has her head up and is alert. She seems distressed. She has a raspy, labored breath.

Keep in mind, the heat index is currently 102- labored breathing is present in everyone, including me.

The pushing and shoving on the roosts has gotten pretty bad lately, and when the big girls fall, it's brutal. They are HEAVY. I suspect George fell off of a roost in the melee and got hurt.

I also suspect the resulting stress has cranked her already elevated body temperature. As far as I know, she's been eating and drinking normally. They eat a 17% mix I get at a local feed mill, made up of a grain combo. They have fresh water in 6 shady locations.

When I brought her inside, I could see that there was a poop next to her, and it had a very watery liquid portion, with a solid portion- this is common in my flock when it's hot out. I wouldn't think it unusual- BUT...as I carried her in, trying to keep her in the position in which I found her, she leaked clear fluid from her vent all down me- about 2 or 3 tablespoons.

I've got her in the bathroom in a big Rubbermaid tub, which she fills, practically. She has had some honey water, as I haven't any electrolytes on hand. She doesn't want it, but I did dribble some in.

She has gotten even raspier, though there is no discharge, no swelling, no neurological symptoms, etc.

I wonder if she's punctured a lung...it's awful. It doesn't strike me as being a respiratory disease so much as an injury. I can't tell what's going on with her leg.

I can't spend money on the vet- though I ought to force the vet to work on her for free, since he broke my roo's beak on Thursday...that's another story.

Is this sounding at all like a disease to anyone? I can't see how it could occur so suddenly. Everyone else is normal. No new birds in since March, and they were day-old chicks.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome!

Thank you!

Well, she's sleeping, but is quite raspy. I have been seeing that some people who posted earlier regarding heat injuries are noting respiratory symptoms...I'm starting to really lean towards heat distress + a bad fall. I really hope she's better in the morning.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Okay, her breathing is mostly back to normal- no rasp, no wheeze, just a little mouth breathing.

She tries to sing to me a little like she usually does, but it sounds horrible. Sad.

There is no poop, after a whole night of being in this box. She's just laying with er good foot under her, staying on her side and her bad foot sticking out, looking as though she has no control over it at all. I felt around, looking for an obvious break or sign of pain, but she just endured it.

She tenses and makes a little stress noise when I try to check her vent.

I'm just so confused- do I have multiple issues here?

I hope your girl is doing better. We had one have a chain link gate fall on her two days ago. I thought she had a broken leg and wing because she wasn't using either. We kept her confined to a small rabbit hutch for the first day and let her out in the coop the second. She is doing better but is still limping. I think hers may have just been a bad sprain. Anyhow when they get stressed in anyway it exacerbates their symptoms 100%. I sure hope she is fine. The fact that the raspiness is subsiding sounds like a good sign. Is she eating and drinking okay? Maybe you could get some electrolytes or just put some sugar in her water?
Good luck!
PS You ought to call the vet and see if he will see her since he broke your chick's beak. It's the least he could do.

I had a chicken with a hurt leg and a turkey. Diffrent times though. I posted and the replies I got for both were to give them baby asprin. Also a wet mash, plain yogurt, milk and there feed mixed together. It looks like malt o meal after you add some milk. Anyways I did that for 2 days with the chicken and 4 for the turkey and they both got better. The baby asprin was a big help with the turkey. If it is not a leg injury I don't know then. Good luck.

I don't think it can be Marek's because she's past the age of normal infection, she hasn't lost weight (she's obese), and her eyes are clear.

It's almost certainly an injury, but I can't pay the vet- I lost my job in January and just paid the guy a fortune to work on my roo's beak...his office partner is a chicken-kisser and may see Georgie Porgie, but I would have to owe them...and they don't do that.

I want to hold the roo over them, but an adversarial relationship isn't a good idea, since no one else sees birds in town...and yet I need their help now.

I just called and neither of the bird docs is in until tomorrow...dangit.

I'm going to feed her some of the baby parrot food and get some liquid into her that way.

I'll try some aspirin, too- I'm sure she's in pain.

I just tried to help her stand...she's very heavy so I thought maybe it would help her- perhaps she could once upright...no go.

She's lying comfortably for now.

It could be she's over-heated or has heat exhaustion. Maybe move her indoors to a cooler area where she can rest. I have given my chickens scrambled eggs and pedialyte to drink for weakness. Good luck!!!
