1 year old hen can't walk-possible injury? Update- broken pelvis.

She is inside- spent the night in the coolest room of the house.

This greatly helped her breathing and distress, and now the big concerns are that she hasn't pooped all night, and she has this bum leg.

I'm REALLY perplexed that she hasn't pooped all night- as I carried her in, she dribbled all down me, but it was the liquid part of the poo that increases in high heat.

Yesterday was a heat index over 110 most of the day. Today should be 98 with humidity of 73%- probably well over the same heat index. I'll be keeping her in.

Check the motor and sensory nerves in her bad leg. Give it a push/ pull and see if she can resist the force. Then tickle, rub,or pinch a toe to see if she reacts. That might give you a better idea of what's going on. Do chickens have strokes? Not heat stroke, but regular stroke? Often in humans, illness causes injury, so your hen might have fallen as a result of something else wrong. Keep us posted, and if she isn't walking, be sure to shift her position periodically, so her circulation isn't compromised. Good luck!

You said she threw up? Check her crop! It could be sour crop or impacted crop, especially if she vomited and isn't pooping.

Yes, check the crop, but also you said she leaked clear fluid on you - could she have broken an egg in her vent? That would HURT and most certainly be causing distress. Perhaps she broke it in the fall?

Just another thing to check. Hope you figure out what's wrong (besides the obvious hurt leg).

It wasn't like egg- it was like the super watery poo they get when out in the heat for prolonged periods- so it made sense, aside from the fact that she isn't usually incontinent when I pick her up- I attributed it to her distress until I found a distinct lack of poo this morning. Nothing yet.

I did do a push-pull on her leg- she grunts. I think she clearly hurts. Thing is, when she's tried to stand a couple of times, she doesn't move it, however I see toe flexion and movement in the other leg very obviously.

I'm concerned because I wonder if she doesn't perhaps have an egg lodged blocking? Or maybe he's so heavy because she's an internal layer? I can't tell who I get eggs from, so I wouldn't know if she's laying or not unless I catch them. I haven't caught her in a while, but that doesn't mean anything.

Anyone else know why no poo? Also, she did have some food in her crop this morning, but I'm not sure if it's usually totally empty. She does not really want to eat, and I made her drink 5 ml of water with a syringe.

ETA- the food in her crop was minimal- she free ranges all day and usually has a crop the size of a baseball- this was about 2 or 3T worth of food.

Thanks, everyone- I'll update if things change. Right now she wants nothing from me and is just laying there. I wish I could help her.

An obese chicken?!

I've never heard of that!!

Hope your girl gets better!!

Well, she pooped. It was of the consistency of cecal poo, but Kelly green and white.

Of course my birds eat tons of grass, so green isn't unusual, but when something's wrong we look at every detail to the nth.

He crop isn't emptying. Does anyone know if this is unusual in a case of stress?

She has been inside for 18 hours, but likely had heat stress, and while that's gone, could it have shut down digestion temporarily?

Blimey...I hate feeling helpless.
