10-2-10 Lewiston, Maine Chickenstock (not just for chickens)

Quote:
Thanks Hoppy, but the manager and I have talked and like Stano said, its their choice. With some of the information that I bring to the table, it may help increase chick sales inside and out. Folks are desperate for birds through out the last few years. Unbelievable.
Now we also have those that buy and give away, buy and give away after the cute has worn off, sadly. Not pointing at anyone here, just in general.
There is a pet day, I cannot recall what they call it, but I guess this is when they would like to schedule it. I'll find out better details in March when we finally make a date. I like the middle of the month, when folks are gearing up for critters.

Also, I was in the health food store in Poland (? name- I'm great huh- lol) but the owner seemed really excited at the thought of such a thing in his area, he raises sheep and Highland cattle. We may bring out the locals that are in the woods down in Poland! Either way, looks like we are gaining on the chickenstocks around the Lewiston/Poland. If anyone else from the Poland area would like to take over that spot, please let me know, I'd be more then glad to share information, suggestions and the front row parking! We can bring the reading material too.
Stano....its your job to keep that danged wind away! Ha ha ha! Oh, and have you guys heard anything about Lewiston opening a Abattoir (SP), most of this area go to West Gardiner Beef. Just curious.

Abattoir = Slaughter House, for those who have not heard of that word. I did not know the term either so I looked it up to find out what it meant. I have not heard of any such companies opening up in Lewiston.

stano,
thanks for looking that word up, I was like- huh?
I think the first meet up is usually in march but might be more weather dependant.

I like to look up words that I'm not familiar with. Used to do a lot of readers digest "word of the day".

If the earliest is March I guess I'll have to re-do my thinking for the Sanford Farm Day at TSC. The Farmers Almanac is predicting a cold winter in 2011, so March may be a cold month. Only time will tell for sure.

I was thinking of doing a mid April Farm Day and then either hold a Farm Day on the first or second Saturday of the following months up to October.

I'm sorry guys, I assumed that everyone had one in their neighborhoods. My bad. It was never called a "slaughter house", although there have been folks that owned barns and their line of work was working in their "slaughter house's". Eh, sorry.
I did not realize we had that many pet days, weeks months and I certainly do love this one...
Hairball Awareness Day, April 30

and I'm aware of this, makes me wonder how many aren't- lol.

I usually start in May, only because folks are gearing up from a long winter, mud season is still a issue and that means folks cannot get out on the feilds, lawns, gardens. Now, I was thinking that some of the NH groups used to do them most of the winter? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Seems as though folks wanting to come and buy chicks/pullets, it would be the wrong time of year. But folks do.

Now, with your birds, do you find a reduction in fertility in, say Feb? Or is that a light thing too? I have hatched 9 standard cochins and keeping my fingers crossed that I'll have one decent show bird of my own breeding. I have so darn much to learn it seems over whelming.

I do know one thing, you need to start your free advertising around 2 months before your very first one. That way it brings a curiosity, talk and the farmers come out. (I'll make sure pig man joins you Stano

) Gosh I'm funny...NOT!
Hoppy is right, early events are according to the weather. If it was a spring like this past one, it would be wonderful. We'd love another one like this summer had been.

Hey Hoppy, did you go to the Windsor show- or did you work it? Just curious to hear how everyone did. I know without batting an eyelash that Sarah PRF won the juniors. Its a given and good for her! She is a good kid, and I've picked her brain with how to do certain things. Which reminds me, wonder if we could get her to do a spot on poultry care, nails, beak, and feather care. She & Erika did one for the Augusta farm day and I learned a lot. I've used a great deal of what she showed us. Anyhow, sorry to babble so long, take care and have a wonderful day!

yes, I was there and I did work it as well.
my blr placed for their color, my white dottie got 4th (to the best in show bird) and my son's white silkie took best of color and 2nd best silkie in jrs. Sarah did very well, cleaned up in the awards. but I have sad news. the silkie my son won with, died in a freak accident a few days after the show. he is just devastated. and we are now on a search for a replacement.
I think the club did very well overall. over 400 birds entered and I handled the auction and sales were quite good.

there were a fair amount of vender sales, not sure how those were compared to other fall shows.

Actually no, she didn't get show Champion this time. She did good though, got Champion LF, Champion Pigeon, Best Featherleg and first in her showmanship class. She is great doesn't care if she wins or not just getting out and having fun. On to Deerfield

Jr. Show Cahmpion was her cousin, Anitta with a barred rock bantam. Oh yeah have a link too from Farmington http://www.sunjournal.com/franklin/story/915474
She
had a blast doing it. I'm sure she would be more than happy to do a grooming demo, loves her birds

Oh Hoppy, tell him we are soooo sorry for his loss

We are going to several out of State shows the next couple of months, we know several breeders with very nice silkies and will talk to them.
