100 Books- How do you stack up? (pun intended!)

I've read fifty six of them and parts of many others. I just can't seem to get through Dickens and Tolstoy. I get bogged down if the first few chapters. I think this list is heavily weighted with European authors. I didn't see:

The Scarlet Letter
any Poe, who wrote some of the first mystery fiction
any Faulkner
Dune and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy but not I, Robot or Alas, Babylon?
any Twain, where is Tom Sawyer

So if this is a list of should/must reads, it missing some critical fiction. I must say, we BYCers seem to be a well read bunch!

I've read 51, I was also told that after a person gets out of school they read an average of 5 nonfiction books the rest of their lives, very sad. I've read 20 this year includeing "the Worst Hard Time Ever" a book about the dust bowl that I think is a must read.

Alot of these book were from high school and college days and sometimes, on a whim.

Edgar Allen Poe and Mark Twain were one of the few classics should be read as well.

I remember reading Jacob Riis, dealing with early century poverty and living in my English class.....it was wonderful but so sad.

I don't know what kind of English Lit teachers they got there and it seems like English Literature is being taken out of the schools because of budget cuts. There is only so much time to a semester or a year of English Lit allowed in high school. If they took that out, it's a pity that the real classics would be taken from the wayside.

I can't really go over this list. I'd be real curious to know who at the BBC decided what went on the list. It looks like a list of books that have been made into popular movies. A lot of the books on the list are romances, I might watch the movie if I was at home sick and nothing else was on...I wouldn't read the book, I would be too afraid they would leave an impression on me. Like most degrees of Christian, I have read parts of the Bible, but I've probably read more apocrypha and pseudoepigraphia.

Some are children's books, some are just popular fiction. I don't really think most children's books are very good reading. My parents gave me a lot of cool stuff to read when I was young, like 'The Old Man and the Sea'. Unlike most people I don't think a kid should be given anything poorly written to read if one can at all help it, except if they want to read the trash other kids read, and would feel left out or peculiar if they didn't. Other than that I think it's better they learn what good writing is. My older sister also really pushed us younger kids to read good stuff. My sister gave my brother Kafka's 'Metamorphosis' when he was about 11. I can recall talking with my parents or sister about why something is a great piece of writing from a very young age, like how 'bad writers tell instead of show, Steinbeck doesn't tell, he shows'.

I think Harry Potter books have THE worst writing I've ever had the misfortune to attempt to read, Rebecca was pretty painful too, but at least the vocabulary was a little more broad. I just can't take Rowling. I read a couple paragraphs and I started to get hives. Same with Lord of the Rings, Dune.

I've only read a few things on the list. I read Love in the Time of Cholera, Catch-22 and The Kite Runner, To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye (when I was ten I loved anything by the author J.D. Salinger), Remains of the Day, plus older books, but not stuff like Anne of Green Gables or Little Women. A Suitable Boy was wonderful. But I also like many other Indian writers. Gita Mehta (author) is really good.

My favorite fiction authors are Eudora Welty, Flannery O'Connor, Salinger, Steinbeck, Hemingway, Georg Luis Borges, Umberto Eco, and Bibhutibhishan Bannerjee, author of 'Unvanquished' (Aparajito). When younger, I liked Richard Brautigan(Willard and His Bowling Trophies).

I think the writing in HP is dreadful too, and that there are much better children's books out there.

I love Anne of Green Gables, hated Little Women. I find the mix odd too. I read everything, but a lot of 19th century literature is just too difficult for me to get into; although I like Jane Austen. I think it would be interesting to see how the list was generated, just to see why certain things were included.
 
I just googled this topic. Evidently its been going around facebook for a while. The list has morphed several times, and has gotten more "high brow" as it has morphed. In 2003 BBC did a survey of the 100 most popular books, and that list had a lot of similarity to this list. So the list is most popular books, and then morphing; but it is interesting. Thanks, that makes more sense. I was afraid when I first read it, that it was some sort of recommended reading list to better oneself, which made me think, 'As a species, we are doomed'.

Well I just counted and I have read 55 of them over the years. Some others I have read some of and then not finished for some reason or another.
I think also sometimes comparing books with the films is interesting. Took me a while as I was not sure how to bold!!!!!!

Edited to add - I just printed the list out and asked my DH - he has read 41 of them so far way more than the 6 books the BBC predicted????? I am of the mind there are a deal of good books not even mentioned on this list!!!!!!! A lot of them are standard school reading here like Of mice and Men and Lord of the Flies not to mention a lot of the Shakespeare. I am working my way through a lot of the Phillipa Gregory books right now that have also been made into film and plays for television, like "The little House" and the Tudor novels.
