Well, I think we've all beaten the BBC's "great expectations"! What, they think we're a nation of illiterates?

I am 54. I have been an avid reader all of my life; started seriously reading when I was 10 y.o.

I have read all of these, except not all of Shakespeare, nor all the Sherlock Holmes books.

It is an outstandingly wonderful list.

But where is William Styron? Where is Pat Conroy? Where is Ferrol Sams? I could go on....

Oh, and where is Terry Prachett? (j/k)

I agree that the list is incomplete, and fairly subjective. There are many, many wonderful works that are not on the list, and some on the list just don't cut it as great literature. Harry Potter????......come on. Saying that, I eagerly awaited my pre-ordered copies each time...and was sad when the series came to an end. However, I was HEARTBROKEN when I finished LOTR (junior in HS).

And.....I own each and every Prachett book..and am re-reading the Moist von Lipwig ones right now.

Another question: how many of the books have you read more than once or twice???

I don't think that Dan Brown belongs on the list, though I have read all of his books.

A Prayer for Owen Meany is good, but where is The World According to Garp? Where is Heinlein? Arthur C. Clark? Ursula LeGiun (sp)?

And, one of my current faves: The Gone-Away World.

And all of the Gormengast books, including Titus Groans.

I have the weird, old-brain feeling that I am leaving off my all-time favorite author.........

I agree completely about Mark Twain. Many authors should have all their works listed.

But There are tons of Asimov books not here! Where is I, Robot? What about Stranger in a Strange Land??

And I confess I could just never get through Tolstoy. Goddess knows I tried. The Bible was easier. Why isn't the Q'ran here?? Or the Torah??
