May be we are ??????? - I actually prefer this list. It just has far better books on it. Iwould still ditch a few though and add some others!!!!!
Well, turns out I have read The Hobbit... guess this isn't the first time I thought to start there then go on to LotR, but since I didn't even remember reading it I reckon I'll finish it.

Agree with some of the additions, Oliver Twist & Les Mis for example... but snipping out Treasure Island to put in Hamlet AND The Complete Works of Shakespeare?? When NEITHER are books in their own right?? Bit redundant I think. Oh and only 4 of the HP books made the original list... not all of them. The altered list includes all seven by saying HP Series, and opens up an extra three spots. Interesting the way it morphed.
Instead of I, Robot I'd put Isamov's Foundation series. There are several I could put on here for pure reading enjoyment, but I'm not sure they would qualify as classical reading. Obviously just my opinion.

Okay... so what would be your top 25 books that every adult should read at some point in their life? I am curious to see what you all think a well rounded person should have read. (Plus I really need some new reading material!)
I'd say At Least One: Dickens, Austen/Bronte, Dumas.. if nothing else just to get a gauge of the time period in a less structured way than your typical history class.
Les Mis... EXCELLENT... well worth it to read, though it does take a while. For the above reason, but also because it will make you THINK. Which is always good.
I'd say the same about Moby Dick but I hated that book. It was NOT a fun read, wasn't easy to read, he captured the obsession very well, but reading all that tripe about how to slaughter whales just was NOT for me. But it DID open my eyes to the brutality and waste of the practice so in all fairness I do agree that it does have it's place on the list.
Green Miles... excellent story, excellent characters... but I'm torn as to whether that falls into the above list or the fun list.
Oh and Steinbeck... a wonderful author... I can STILL hear the crack from Red Pony... a good 15 years later. Any author that can leave that kind of impression is worth reading.
Tolkien, Lewis, Dahl are all excellent authors, but really just for fun... but then I feel that way about the above ones too...
Alice and Wonderland, Animal Farm, Watership Down, Wizard of Oz were more than just children's stories so I'd include them as well.
I would also suggest The Jungle... eye opening book that. For those who don't understand why unions were EVER formed... this is a good story of why (at one time anyways) they were very much needed no only to protect the workers but also to protect the consumers! ICK!
Diary of Anne Frank is an important book, as is Huck and Tom... we NEED to remember those times so we do NOT repeat those same mistakes. Just sweeping them under the rug and pretending they don't happen will NOT help future generations avoid those mistakes!!
His Dark Materials was a wonderful series... made me cry... I'd have to add that one to the For Fun list...
OHH SO many to choose from... that's just off the top of my head ... this is going to require some serious thinking!

I've read 11 of them, but I'm surprised that they didn't have Gulliver's Travels and C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy and such listed there. Quite a few I've been meaning to check out, though.
Books read:
Jane Eyre
Pride and Prejudice
Lord of the Rings
The Hobbit
A Tale of Two Cities
To Kill A Mockingbird
Animal Farm
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Bible
The Secret Garden (AWFUL book!)
Interestingly, all of these were read in the past 3 years.
In fact, all but The Secret Garden were read in the past 2 years.
How many of the one omitted on this list from the original that I have read
31. The Story Of Tracy Beaker, Jacqueline Wilson
33. The Pillars Of The Earth, Ken Follett
36. Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson
37. A Town Like Alice, Nevil Shute

It was nice to see Terry Pratchett books on this list. While most people probably wouldn't like them, I think they are great and have the majority of the Disc World series.
I'll have to take this list to the library; it's a great reading list!
