100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

ARIELL srry if I spelt ur name wrong names are funny. You hit the nail on the head. I bought 170 $ of heritage seed from Pinetree seeds If families gardened and cooked the big business wouldnt have so much power. Saw a show on the foriegn coffee trade NIGHTMARE. doesnt describe it. I see you have Platium status. I salute you We can fight the good fight with good ol American values One plant and chicken at a time. Thanks for doing ur part
THis is a huge challenge to encourage people to make their own food-- or as much as possible. You will find a number of people here who are light years ahead of me. I am learning from those people.

The cornish cross chicken is a wonderful creation developed just from careful selection and a lot of research money. THis bird can make the most meat from the least amount of grain. With the production that is possible today, I am annoyed that we actually have tooo many people not receiving enough food of good quality.

The aspect I find interesting about the cornish cross is that it can also be grown in a pasture situati9on in which grasses are also included in the diet. IT is not solely a grasses diet but also includes a grain based component. Overall a more nutritious product.

I came to this conclusion after trying to raise 2 batches of 15 cornish chicks last summer on grain, and by cutting grasses for them. Ended up as a grain based diet and some fermented feed. This was my introduction as I read a number of Joel Saladins books. It fired my interest in another way of raising livestock for food.

THis year I"m trying to improve the land I have to produce more forages and get a line of heritage chickens for primarily meat; and another line also for meat.

I don't worry about my name being spelled wrong-- no problem there!! Are you raising any chickens or ducks or turkeys?

You really need to have access to those that have the information do tackle your plan for AK. THat is a harsh environment and you will need the benefits of those who live there and can recommend which foods to grow in the short growing season. My suggestion is to keep to the small livestock until you know how to protect the animals from predators-- you will have plenty of those trying to steal your food animals. I have been raising livestock for 25 years-- it is more difficult than you realize. Hope you will be internet connected as you will benefit from that and need questions answered.

My caution is reading is not the same as doing. What works in one place may not in another. Early on a lot of homesteaders did not make it. Good to supplement our food supplies to day but really really tough to live off the land whole hog.

Takes the right attitude, hard work and a drive to see it through to the end. Alaska is a tough place to homestead and I imagine it has a steep learning curve as far as the wildlife, seasons and growing conditions. Homesteading is hard enough to learn but doing it in one of the hardest places to do it is really stacking the deck against yourself.

I hope you keep us posted!

Then you probably know I homesteaded with my family while growing up, so I know what you are headed into...but without the bears, moose, harsh weather conditions and small growing season. But I still think it will be a great adventure and could possibly be the biggest thing in your life. I know my life changed when we homesteaded and I've never been the same since.

I hope you are going into it with a good partner/wife/etc. to help you build and stay on track.
