100 Broilers and Fermented Feed Project

I have tried several different methods of watering.

I am not sure if it would work for you, but consider a garden house with enough length you move chickens around and investing in Little Giant waters. We have had no problems with them and they work great.

They are smaller than my hatchery WRs by just a tad and much lighter, though they are just getting their full growth so I expect they will get heavier. They truly are just beautiful to see and to touch...softest feathers of any breed I've ever had.

The issue I have been struggling with is the meat birds. meaning-- getting enough meat from a decent sized bird. So I tried cornishx this year. Two groups of 15. ( I still can't imagine 100!!) Lovel carcas, but would need a tractor for protection and THAT is a no go on my property of ENw England rocks. NOt WR, not PR, though if I lived over in Plimouth, maybe PR woul be the perfect fit. ANy ways, I've been playing with the idea of a project meat bird. HEnce my 3 cornishx girls in with my 2 biggest mixed mutt boys. AND looking at CHookschicks Konza birds. SHe used a lot of non AMerican stock in her line up. I'm eager to raise up a good number and see how they grow as meat birds.

SHe added some cornishX at one time, but Idon't know if that line was culled or not. Sluggish birds are NOT in the plan. Though the cornish might need to be a smaller percentaage of the mix. THe other concern I have about he cornish is the terrible laying rate. I had been warned by a cornish breeder. Low egg laying rates are not my goal at all. Seems the lay rate is heritable though.

Kuntrygirl-- will you be keeping any of the pullets for breeding?? Just curious.

Mine are still very dark but my layer mash has a very high corn content to it...adding a little corn to your feed will help you with your yolk colors. Mine are also taking every opportunity to forage...wherever they can...

This is the snow we are dealing with right now LOL The goats can't even make it through it (or don't want to). A rooster flew 200 feet and I crawled through it to get him.. because he was an idiot and sunk right down after I spooked him... I was having a hard time breathing after that. It's thigh deep and the snow that tricks you where you think you can walk on top of it, but you're just a little TOO heavy and break through every other step.. Pain in the butt!

How many days until spring?

We were discussing how many CX to raise this year... I'm thinking 50 and doing the rest heritage - as in my excess roosters... 50 should easily sustain our family and my folks for the year.

Speaking of tents.. check out the tent on my heritage Rock - she is Silver Pencilled

Those are drop dead gorgeous birds, Aoxa!!! I couldn't help myself from saying, "WOW!!!" when I saw that BR boy! I've said it before and I'll say it again, wherever you source your stock, they have some superlative genetics!!!! Wish I had a source like that in these parts. That tent is the widest I've seen on a BR ever because I deal in hatchery BRs when I have them and they just don't make them like that there. She's gorgeous!!!

Beautiful snow! We haven't had thigh deep snow here for a few years and when we did, my dogs broke path for me and the chickens, so it was easier for me to get out and feed/water. Be careful out there!

Thank you :) That is my main man Gatsby. He is the widest boy I have..

This is a few weeks back. I can't wait to pass those genes on.

My Rocks take forever to start laying, but when they do, watch out! Those eggs are red sex link size and at least 5-6 days a week.
