Does Vespa not have a beak.

Vespa and her sisters, Scooter and Frankie, were debeaked by what we suspect was an abusive previous owner (suspected because Frankie's upper beak was removed all the way back to where her nostrils are, which isn't right for any reason if you ask me). When they arrived here, not only were their beaks in terrible shape, but their feathers were ratty and their long tail feathers had been cut off supposedly so that they would fit into a cage that was too short for them. I'm rather happy with how far they've come since. :) Unfortunately, Frankie is still absolutely terrified of humans, and so I don't get many good pictures of her. :/

Perhaps too lucky. Those little ladies have developed quite the attitudes (just look at Scooter's DUN-DUN-DUNNNN picture).

Anyway, back to the main topic, I have some pictures from the past few days to share!

Yesterday, my mom took some grapes out to the hens, after which it occurred to me that they had never had them before! It was 43. a first-time snack!

They searched high and low for them!

1000

Grapes were snapped up left and right!

1000

Wyandottes Ani and Raven seemed to excel in the sport of grape-grabbing!

1000

This is madness! Skua snatches from Sparrow and makes a run for it!

1000

Cricket tears this grape a new one!

1000

Flicker wolfs down one last grape!

1000

Then, they all look around for more. "That's all?!"

1000

The other night, I came across 60. an odd egg--or, perhaps more accurately, an artistic egg! It seems Skua was getting bored with the same old thing!

1000

Her usual egg is at the back in this picture, with a pullet egg in front for size and color comparison.

1000

And finally, beware of... 96. ZOMBIES!!!

1000

...Okay, so there's just one, but Fancy took just the most perfect zombie picture, didn't she?

We had a cold day, only getting in the teens at best. On cold days like today, the best thing to warm a hen up is 41. a warm winter snack: oatmeal!

Barred rock 62. sisters Diana and Natalie wait impatiently for the snack.

1000

At last, it's here! Everyone digs in!

1000

Get it while it's hot!

1000

Fancy looks on longingly, but doesn't dare approach the older hens.

1000

Oatmeal can be messy. Olive is surprised by how messy it is!

1000

The Wyandotte 62. sisters, Sparrow, Raven, and Ani, move in for their share.

1000

With crops full of warm oatmeal, it's time to nestle in and keep warm for 6. chicken bed-time. Mako fluffs out her beard to keep her face warm.

1000

Wynne practically disappears behind her beard!

1000

Merlin tucks her head in under her wing.

1000

Kate looks for a better perching space.

1000

Cressida gets one last preen in for the day.

1000

Finally, they started giving me dirty looks for keeping them up...

1000

1000

...So I moved on to the 33. rafter banties! (And rafter Easter-eggers, too.)

1000

Alas, Scooter did not approve. It was time for sleep.

1000

Good night!

Raven peeking over the back of one of the barred rocks had me giggling, too.

Hey, y'all, I wanted to make a correction to an earlier theme, 43. a first-time snack. The hens have had grapes before because, duh, they have grape vines growing in their yard. That was the first time we had given them grapes, though! And if that doesn't count, well, they've never had oatmeal before yesterday...
