11th Annual Easter Hatch a Long 2020

24 spitzhauben eggs set a week ago for the hatchalong and 24 spitzie eggs developing. Hopefully they all make it to the end. 100% fertility rate, let's hope the same for hatch rate!

Please at least one be fertilised I will most likely candle on day 4, then again on day 7. If on day 7 there is nothing they’ll be chucked.

Well this isn't good. Candled. 2!.. That's all I'm seeing. The eggs I got were a mess. Quite a few broken..and the yolk was over a lot of the others. Blood rings and all tonight. Bummer. Glad I set more! Won't count for the hatch along, but hopefully they will do better!

I hope you get at least two to hatch!

Day 12 duck eggs. Swishing around in there like crazy!

While reading up on hatching duck eggs I keep coming across a rather ominous bit of advice NOT to candle duck eggs too much. Are duck eggs really that much more sensitive than chicken eggs in this regard? I love candling but I don't want to do them any unnecessary harm. I understand the risk of something happening any time there is handling of the eggs. I hand turn. So they're being touched already, many times, throughout the day. Is there any other reason not to candle?

Started with 9. Now down to 7. From my own flock: 1 was infertile and the second ended up with a blood ring at day 5. Still have my 6 from meyer hatchery and 1 from my bantam cochins. First picture is from day 2 and the second is day 7.

I candle pointed end down BUT my eggs are still in the turner. If you have a good candling light you should be able to see veining action and webbing wending up to the air sac. The ones that are questionable come out for further inspection. (And then if I'm still unsure, they are placed in a separate row in the turner so I can check on them later to confirm a stay or nay.)

Some egg colors are easier to candle than others, but sufficiently along (Day 7 to 10) you can tell the difference between webbing and clearness (Day 10 for Marans as their shells are really dark.) I candle at Day 7 or 10 initially and then one more time before the final candling at lockdown.

Yes, you can see the air cell very well by candling from the top. To see more of the development, you can candle from the side or bottom

Ok Ron...here ya go. It's getting old, but still works like a charm. Made from a big ol bean can. Then hubby put a handle from a lamp to hold it in place while I candle. I put a hand towel on the drawer to protect the wood on the drawer. Plus it keeps the lamp tight. View attachment 2066615View attachment 2066616View attachment 2066618
